I post on here pretty regular and usually get a little feedback/advice from fellow users, but this time I really need some feedback. Did anyone go through an initial breakout period while on Dorxy (doxycycline)? I going into my 4th and I begun experiencing the worst breakout I have ever head (even since puberty). I am consistently breaking in large whiteheads that are so unsightly and severely scarring my skin. I practically called my derm today in tears because I just don't know what to do. I've been following the plan, very rigidly with only a few slip ups ( I missed 1 day of my taking my pill).

My current regimen is AM:1 150mg dorxy, Clean and Clear daily facial scrub and clean and clear on the spot treatment, PM Neutrogena Oil Free Acnewash and Aczone

Help please!!! If this is being caused by my antibiotics then I can understand, I would just like to know how long I should expect this IB and is there a light at the end of the tunnel that isn't 2 more months away.

It took almost two months before my son started to see some real improvement. His derm said it would take 6-8 weeks before we could evaluate whether or not it was working. There were days when I seriously considered taking him to see another doctor - especially that first month!

I would say the second and third month was when we really started noticing a difference.

I've been keeping a log on this message board and Summerfalls also has one that may help.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the insight. I will definitely follow your log. I think I am going to start one of my own with my roller coaster journey. I went to see my derm today and she really didn't seem overly concerned with my new breakout which is interesting. She says my breakouts could be from the aczone bringing all my deep acne to the surface. But as my day as progressed my skin has gotten increasingly worse. My cheeks have many small pustules (i think that's the right term) - small raised bumps with no heads and then tiny white heads on face as well. But she has prescribed me yet another topical - acanya. She says I can spot treat or put all over my face in the AM along with my Doxy. So I may give my skin a one day rest tomorrow and try that to see if that calms down some of the inflammation. We also decided to give my Doxy another month to see if it is going to work.. If not, i'm really contemplating going on accutane.

It's really hard to be patient when you aren't sure whether or not a regimine is working. (Been there!) I hope you start seeing some improvement soon.

Keeping a log is helpful. Sometimes the improvement is so gradual that it is hard to remember where you started. With a log you can look back and remind yourself how far you've come.

Best of luck to you! Let us know how you are doing.

Well it's been a week since I last posted and i'm sad to say that there has only been slight improvement, but I am still breaking out. I have to blackheads that manifested into whiteheads under my eye, several whiteheads on my forward and temple. So as you can probably tell, right now I am very disheartened. I know that I in my 5th week of dorxy and I thought that the breakout would subside by now. Again, I am trying to stay positive and really evaluate the effects at the 6 weeks mark but it hard. I think like everyone else, the acne is awful, but it's the brown spots/marks that it leaves afterward that make it equally devastating. So I am scared that i'm going to have a face full of brown spots before my breakouts finally subside. Any encouragement would help. I'm starting to think, should I be on a higher dosage.
I currently take 150 mg, but have read that some individuals are taking 200mg a day and have great results. I'm using my topicals regularly, but I do not feel they are giving me the relief that I want because I don't want to have to keep treating acne, I want to begin preventing it all together. Also, I am wondering if it is my diet. I am trying not to fall into these radical diets of raw foods, wheat free, etc. I am a healthy, fit male, that works out and eats well I do not eat dairy because I am lactose intolerant ( i do eat cheese and yogurt occasionally ) so i just don't know what to do. I'll be back on my log my progress or lackthereof.
Current Regimen:
AM:
Dorxy 150mg
Cerave Cleanser
Acanya gel (spot treatment per advice of the derm)
Neutrogena oil-free SPF 35

PM:
Cerave Cleanser
Aczone (entire face)
Ceptaphil moisturizer.

Just persist on with doxycycyline! I used to have that initial breakout too and it brought out a lot of pustules. It's somewhat similar to what you described. However, doxycycline worked really well on me and i achieved great skin! The only bad thing is i had a minor outbreak after about 1.5-2 years of not being doxy.. but i went on it again and my skin cleared up really well after 2 months!

I just got back on Doxycycline 3 days ago and yes i am breaking out like crazy as well!

I got a few bumps without heads and also white heads next to my nose. My head now looks horrible with bumps.

I was put on Minocycline a couple of times and then about half a year ago, my GP put me on Doxy as he said it's always good to switch between these two so you won't build the resistance. However I was breaking out really bad and he had to put me back to Mino. Now I went to a new doctor and he prescribed me Doxy again.

I'm quite sure it's Doxy breaking me out! Coz I'm not using anything else so strong as Doxy.

I had an initial break out with Doxy (dorxy) when I first became taking it about 2 months ago. I'm not about to finish month 3 and I'll still not totally happy with my skin. Although I do breakout less frequently and they are not as severe. My breakouts heal quicker as well. But I was hoping to not break out at all anymore. So i'm going back to the drawing board and asking my doctor for a prescription of Bactrim and another antibiotic. I just want to be clear!

i am almost a month into taking doxy and just got a cyst the other day where i already had one injected twice!! grr! does anybody know how long it takes for the doxy to really start working? i was clear for about 12 days and now i got this cyst and a few other small ones popping up. grr! i am headed back to the derm today to figure out if i should stay on doxy or start on accutane. i dont have alot of active acne but i tend to get mostly cysts that leave scars and have had this type of acne for over 14 years now. i was given the accutane prescription years ago and was to afraid to take it but i think i am ready now. i am hoping maybe i can do a low dose or something.

so i went to the derm and she suggested i stay on doxy until april. i have an appt on april 15th to talk about getting accutane if the doxy doesnt do its job. the physicians assistant that i talked to definitley thought that accutane was an option for me since i have had cystic acne for years. i am also going to see an endocrinologist in march to have my hormone levels tested. i have also had my derm recommend spironolactone to me but not sure about it. has anybody taken it without having their hormone levels tested first? i know my acne is hormonal since its on my chin and it shows up about 2 weeks before my tom.

rolleyes.gif Hi all,

New to the board but I want to chime in on this because I began using Doryx and now on generic Doxy...it took a full six weeks to see any improvement and then over night it began to clear up...but I want to let you all in on a secret too...after about 3 weeks of just Doryx and no results, I went to my local health food store and spoke with a lady whose son was on the same med and she started him on Adult Probiotics..well at this point at being 47 (argh) years old i thought what the heck??? It worked...I call it my combo cocktail....1/2 Doryx in am and 1/2 in pm and my Adult Probiotic at night and whamo...my face has been clear for almost six months...not one cystic pimple or anything.....just wanted to share....Thanks!

Hi, give the doxy a chance to kick in...accutane is NOT good...bad side effects...believe me...doxy will help..just give it time...I used to have to get 2-3 injections a month...I know...and it does seem they come back in the same spots...weird? I also threw away all my make up and soap I had...started fresh with only Neutrogena Acne make up, Dove soap or Ivory soap and the Doxy at first and then added Adult Probiotic pill once a day....less is more really....best wishes.

Karen,
You know I am just sitting here thinking I felt the exact same way you did last year at this time...I cried and cried and thought I am 47 for goodness sake...you know my dermatologist was stumped with my break outs because they were not the normal of anything he saw...I actually have a combination of rosacea and adult acne...lucky me..huh!!?!!! Maybe you too..that may explain...do you happen to break out when you eat particular things? I am wondering because yogurt is a big rosacea break out trigger also salsa and mexican food...and I love salsa...anyway..if you have a natural food store near you, maybe just try the Adult Probiotic pills they are much different really than yogurts, Activia, etc...I can't remember the brand I take but they require refigeration and I can check when I get home and write back tomorrow if that is okay...and also it took me about 3 dermatologists and I finally found one that makes sense to me...hope I helped....also a side note, I ran out of my probiotic pills from last week and finally bought them last night and noticed that a cyst tried to start on my chin..where I used to have ALL my break outs...I doubled my probiotics last night and put on the Drying Lotion from Mario Badescu and it is okay today...did you ever try any Mario Badescu products...I forgot to mention they are a God send too....I use the acne product line but WITHOUT the glycolic acid and any tea tree oils...they can irritate acne for me anyway....C

i am almost a month into taking doxy and just got a cyst the other day where i already had one injected twice!! grr! does anybody know how long it takes for the doxy to really start working? i was clear for about 12 days and now i got this cyst and a few other small ones popping up. grr! i am headed back to the derm today to figure out if i should stay on doxy or start on accutane. i dont have alot of active acne but i tend to get mostly cysts that leave scars and have had this type of acne for over 14 years now. i was given the accutane prescription years ago and was to afraid to take it but i think i am ready now. i am hoping maybe i can do a low dose or something.

so i went to the derm and she suggested i stay on doxy until april. i have an appt on april 15th to talk about getting accutane if the doxy doesnt do its job. the physicians assistant that i talked to definitley thought that accutane was an option for me since i have had cystic acne for years. i am also going to see an endocrinologist in march to have my hormone levels tested. i have also had my derm recommend spironolactone to me but not sure about it. has anybody taken it without having their hormone levels tested first? i know my acne is hormonal since its on my chin and it shows up about 2 weeks before my tom.

Hi, give the doxy a chance to kick in...accutane is NOT good...bad side effects...believe me...doxy will help..just give it time...I used to have to get 2-3 injections a month...I know...and it does seem they come back in the same spots...weird? I also threw away all my make up and soap I had...started fresh with only Neutrogena Acne make up, Dove soap or Ivory soap and the Doxy at first and then added Adult Probiotic pill once a day....less is more really....best wishes.

thanks for the info! i will give it a chance. i am on my last refill so i guess if it starts working i could ask my derm for another one. she only wanted me on it for 2 months but i dont think that makes much sense. believe me i dont want to do accutane but after 14 years of this crap and using every topical out there as well as now every antibiotic it is my last resort. my hubby took it over 20 years ago and he was ok so i hope i would be too. its a scary thing though. i hope that i wont need to do it though but i think a low dose wont be too bad. i think the derm would do say 10mg or so for me. i just want this crap to be done and over with ya know? i need to go out this weekend and buy all new makeup. i am sure its not good to be using the same powder/foundation formula. i cant only imagine how much bacteria is on it. i do wash my brushes just about every night at least, ha!! i eat yogurt with live active cultures everyday but i wonder if i should take my probiotic too. i used to take the accuflora brand but my doctor said that as long as i was eating that yogurt then i dont need to take the probiotic. what do you think? i appreciate your opinion smile.gif

Karen,
You know I am just sitting here thinking I felt the exact same way you did last year at this time...I cried and cried and thought I am 47 for goodness sake...you know my dermatologist was stumped with my break outs because they were not the normal of anything he saw...I actually have a combination of rosacea and adult acne...lucky me..huh!!?!!! Maybe you too..that may explain...do you happen to break out when you eat particular things? I am wondering because yogurt is a big rosacea break out trigger also salsa and mexican food...and I love salsa...anyway..if you have a natural food store near you, maybe just try the Adult Probiotic pills they are much different really than yogurts, Activia, etc...I can't remember the brand I take but they require refigeration and I can check when I get home and write back tomorrow if that is okay...and also it took me about 3 dermatologists and I finally found one that makes sense to me...hope I helped....also a side note, I ran out of my probiotic pills from last week and finally bought them last night and noticed that a cyst tried to start on my chin..where I used to have ALL my break outs...I doubled my probiotics last night and put on the Drying Lotion from Mario Badescu and it is okay today...did you ever try any Mario Badescu products...I forgot to mention they are a God send too....I use the acne product line but WITHOUT the glycolic acid and any tea tree oils...they can irritate acne for me anyway....C

thank you so much for all the info!! oh wow that is crappy to have both adult acne and rosacea. how would i be able to tell if i have rosacea? my face really isnt red or anything. i have been eating yogurt for so many years that i never even thought that could be the culprit of my breakouts. i eat dannon greek yogurt everyday now. i love that stuff but i am definitley willing to try a good probiotic instead. i also eat bananas alot too. do you think those are ok to eat? i used to take the accuflora brand but not sure if those are any good or not. the pharmacist recommended them to me when i went to my local drug store a few months ago. i was having digestion issues and they really helped me out. i have not tried the mario badescu products but so many people have recommended them to me that i have to get some right away. thanks for the info! i really appreciate it.

Hi Karen, Rosacea isn't always the redness..there are different types I learned..I guess mine was the red cyst clustered in one area like your chin. It really is hard to tell but I did notice with mine, the rosacea is more stubborn than normal teenage acne..I would just lay off the yogurt for a few weeks to just see...I know I used to love it too...darn! The adult probiotic pills I take are Udo's Choice brand...I really never heard of them before I took them but bought them in a natural food store. I would check one of those first because I don't think you can buy that particular brand at a drugstore or Walmart, etc....they are in a refigerated section at a natural food store. I know how frustrated you are...believe me I still panic when I feel or see a little redness on my chin...As far as the Mario products..I use the drying lotion, cucumber lotion toner, enzyme cleansing gel and drying cream just at night...it smells but works...I heard about that spiro also working really well on hormonal acne..but I am just too old...did you ob/gyn say anything about being put on the pill for awhile to see if that helps? I know it did when I was younger...hoping all this helps....take care!

oh wow i didnt know that about Rosacea. thats really interesting!! i should see if i can get back into my derm sooner than april to have them really look at my chin. it is very stubborn and seems to keep coming back, blah!! thanks for the info about the probiotic pills. i will definitley look into those! those mario products sound fantastic. i use my olay regenerist cleanser, benzaclin and then the olay regenerist deep hydration cream at night but maybe i should start to switch things up. i do wonder if the benzaclin is even working anymore. i have been on it for over 2 years. i think i will ask my derm if she thinks spiro is a good option for me. i know a previous derm mentioned it years ago. i did take the pill for about 11 years and i think it made my acne worse. i ended up getting a phlebitis (sp?) or something like that in my arm from taking yaz over 2 years ago because my derm suggested i try a different pill. after that i had to get off birth control pills immediately and am never allowed to take hormonal ones again. what was crazy was that my acne completely cleared right away and was gone for about 2 years. i felt so good about myself and it was nice to have no scars this summer and then in august i got a cyst and then in december i started to get more of them. my tom was 5 days early last month and was the worst one i ever had in my life so something is off. i just cant figure out why since the only thing that changed is me starting to take doxycycline. i had awful cramps and i never get cramps. i am 33 now and my good friend said when she turned 34 her tom became terrible. i am hoping it comes on time this month and is back to normal. thanks again for all your help. i really appreciate it wink.gif
