Took Bactrim(sulfameth) for a week, on 4th day, had low-grade fever for entire day, chills flu-like feelings of weakness, terrible headaches, eyes hurting when focusing or looking sideways, Severe lower back, and joint pain, stiff neck and shoulders, constant body aches for 2 days, it felt like someone took a bat and beat me to a pulp. Was always sleepy from pain but couldn't sleep(insomnia too) itching at night (pins and needles).
I stopped taking it the 5th day. 6th day I was OFF but developed a terrible rash all over my legs and arms and red patches on elbows. STILL had the headache, upper back, and shoulder/neck pain, eyes hurt like hell. Couldn't drive to the derm either. Developed 3 cysts in back of neck and got 2 new pimples. Great.
First they say stop taking Bactrim to make an appt next day, then told why did I stop taking it- fever was normal..wth, are they joking? I felt like I was dying! Then new derm told me w I was allergic- DUHH these morons!! Took Bactrim with Aczone..worked okay see no change just dries it out but that's all.
I read all the harsh experiences w/Bactrim(sulfameth) and I wouldn't wish that antibiotic on my wost enemy. (well, maybe my stepmom, haha)Too bad, I heard it's quite effective on acne, great- just my luck.

Now I'm on Doxy 2x daily. Aczone morns, Differin eves.
So far no reactions to Doxy. (read it was pretty safe as far as side effects)
Aczone is OKAY..nothing changing been 2 weeks.
Differin is okay too, been 2 days, no change.
Got a new pimple today. Is this stuff working?

I never had acne problem ALL MY LIFE..All this started 2 months ago out of nowhere.
This is devastating! I broke out first I had 2 at a time which was weird...I never had 2 pimples at a time before! then it increased everyday..OMG idk why..I stopped all my makeup and still, it's been more than a month still getting new ones on medication..this is depressing. Has anyone broken out out of nowhere??

Make sure in the future that you tell docs that you had a reaction to Bactrim (sulfa-based). You're very lucky it didn't progress.

You're 'just' allergic to sulfa meds. It doesn't mean that sulfa meds are bad; they're just bad for YOU.

good luck with doxy, im almost in the same boat as you, took bactrim for 2 months no problems then the front of my elbow became really itchy and now its all scabbed and itchy always, stopping it and going back to the docs to ask for doxy, ive also been on differin for over a year, good stuff dosent get you completely clear but really works at reducing amount of pimples and quicker healing of pimples
