this is just an idea to maybe solve an issue of good threads or posts that may be lost over time, but i wondered if we could have another way to search threads and posts by how people have voted on them, so then install a voting function for any post on the org, and any thread, this would be an alternative to the usual pinning of the posts, so that people may find benefical information faster then usual.
so then similar to the news website digg, the most popular voted posts or threads could rise to the top of the list, the system would be enhanced the more people voted and expressed their opinion.
even to go a bit further, people could be then ranked by the number of votes they had, this would even discourage irrelevant posting on the site, and be another motivator for people to contribute truly useful information, as it would then further them in rank as a contributer to the site.
We seem to have some sort of ranking system here for new members and senior members and i think its based on simply number of posts but not sure, perhaps this could be a second ranking system, or the only ranking system.
Of course im not assuming or implying that this idea is good yet, i was wondering what anyone else thought about this?? are their any negative aspects to this? from what i can tell it could be a good idea.
a "digg" function for the org

I could see how that could be useful. There's something similar to your member ranking on another forum I'm a member of.
The problems I see with it, though, are that member ranks could easily segue into a popularity contest of sorts, and threads might be voted on based on whether people agree or disagree with the information in the thread (or like or dislike the poster) instead of the quality of the information.

What C'est said.
Also, like on Yahoo Answers, I think people would thumbs people down based on opinion and who it is. Like if person A doesn't like person B, person A would have the opportunity to thumbs down everything person B said. A lot of people like myself would probably just end up feeling attacked (even though it's a small ordeal... my anxiety would most likely take over.)
It could be useful, you're right, but I can see a lot of problems arising from it as well.

(i edited this response because i noticed how disorganized it was)
perhaps ranking attributed to users names is a bad idea, maybe just rank a single post or thread only. We do have the search function which is fine as it is , so i suppose this could be an additional way to search posts or threads. So in addition to a pinned thread, there would be a graduated attempt at judging the quality and over time, the additional search function will produce a different way to find threads and posts.
perhaps we could add a button to every post where you could vote if it helped you in any way, and there could be an added search function where you could search how memebrs have ranked the posts, according to how much they were informative and helpful.

Yeah, the only thumbs up option seems better to me than up and down. Plus maybe something on a person's profile showing their statistics on how helpful they've been? That'd be super cool. haha

im more concerned about the idea of people being able to find posts or threads that were voted as most valuable to the community, although the personal ranking statistics dont seem as beneificial. there are good threads and posts that are hard to find, im hoping this will be a way to bring them all out.
