I have a descent amount of blackheads on my cheeks. maybe ten on each side. They aren't that noticeable, but when I woke up this morning, I felt a bump under the blackhead. Now it is red. Does anyone else have this problem? When blackheads turn into pimples or small cysts? any ideas on how to get rid of them?

The blackhead/open comedone and closed comedones are the precursor to pimples and cysts. It's one of the stages to developing the larger lesions. Sometimes they remain blackheads; sometimes they turn into pimples.
There are many ways to combat blackheads; some of them are pinned at the top of this forum. Gentle exfoliation helps. Also regular extractions and facials from an experienced esthetician who is adept at treating acne prone skin can help.
The larger lesions that arise from a comedone should just be treated as any regular lesion; your topical of choice. Maybe even some ice (see last link in signature).

Mine usually only turn into pimples/cysts when I try to squeeze them out.

If you are having black head, then you should remove those using some mask or sticky sheet that remove those things. Your skin perhaps is becoming oily and you should take care of your skin using cleaners from time to time and some exfoliators. But use it once x times in order no to disturb to the normal functioning of your skin, just to clear pores from time to time.
When the thing goes red means infection, you can use BP or Tea Tree Oil to kill some bacteria. But the idea is to clean that pore.

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to try and put some AHA on it and see what happens.

I have seen the strips that go over your nose, but I have my doubt's about them. They seem like they would irritate anyones skin.....

The pore strips can be very irritating. They work fine for some people, but not for others. They also don't always pull out the entire 'clog', just the surface part. That may make it easier for medications to 'get down in there' and help release the rest of it though. (maybe, that's just a guess!)

Ehhhhhh those pore strips are scary. My nose NEVER breaks out, so I don't want to mess with it. But the ones on my cheeks are so annoying. Every time you squeeze them, new pimples around the blackhead start to appear.

Yeah that's why we NEED to leave blackheads and whiteheads ALONE because they will most likely turn into pimples when you irritate them(picking and popping them)

what do you do when your aesthetician tried to get a few and didnt!!! NOW WHAT? I trusted her because the corners of my chin were so lodged with tiny whiteheads (the kind with no pus just a core) and a couple of blackheads that i asked her to remove them so I didnt make a mess of things...im so upset because there are 5 that she didnt get and now the skin is not healing well around the plug..I want to keep trying to get it but nothing will adhere to it so I can grab it...Its a big raw uncoverable mess Any ideas anyone?
