Hey there guys! I've been on minocyclin for the last 6 months or so and want to quit it. I had pretty severe scalp acne/folliculitis on the back of my head and minoc helped a lot (I also used a selenium sulfide shampoo with tea tree oil added), however did not completely cure it.

But I heard that you shouldn't take antibiotics until they don't work anymore, is that true? If yes, what's the best way of quitting it? Cold turkey? "Weaning" it off?

I hope someone can help me out

i wouldnt recommend stopping it all at once, i did that and it ruined my life. went from moderate before minocyclin to clear during it, to severe after it and then it never worked again and nothing has worked since. ive heard many other people say the same thing happened to them as well

Taper your dose. With Minocyline, cut your dose in half every two weeks. If you're taking it twice a day, take it once a day for two weeks. Then once every other day for two weeks. That's the schedule recommended by my doctor for tapering of Minocycline. I did not have an acne bloom/flare due to tapering mino.

Good luck!

hey Wynne!

Are you absolutely sure about this? I really don't want the folliculitis to come back worse than before..

I am sure that this is a good taper for acne treatment; I'm not sure about the taper for folliculitis. Talk to your doctor.

Little update guys!

Went to the derm today (he somehow got me in) and he told me 6 months are more than enough and I should quit cold turkey =/.

I told him antibiotics are the only thing that really helped and asked wether he could prescribe some topical antibiotics for me. however he looked at the medical evidence (we made a smear test of a pimple once) and said there is no suitable topical antib. for this case. All he gave me was some germ soap to use once a week.

I'm really desperate. I REALLY don't want to get the same situation/worse than it was before starting minociclyn. =/

I was on mino for 6 months, 100mg a day and after it stopped having any affect on my acne, i quit cold turkey and my acne still remained the same. I think you will be fine as your doctor stated.wink.gif

alright guys... it's been about 8-10 days since quitting. I started taking zinc the same day when quitting minociclyn and still use the selenium sulfide shampoo..

in the first 1-2 days I felt like the scalp acne may come back, however it didn't happen and I'm still clear. Is this a good sign or way too early to tell?

Alright guys. It's been 1 1/2 months since quitting. The folliculitis did not come back, at least not heavily. I still have a few pimples here and there, but much better than baseline. Still using the seleniumsulfide shampoo with tea tree oil added, which helps big time.

Any experiences? Can the scalp acne strike back in a few months? =/

I thought I'll update this:

My scalp folliculitis did not come back too much, its still under control with the selenium sulfide shampoo i use...

however...

I had slight acne (maybe it was folliculitis too) on/around my nose and mouth before minostad, and that got cleared up nicely, almost no pimples. However, 1 1/2 years later, i'M pretty screwed. My face is very red (maybe some seboherric dermatitis too), i get horrible zits now and then on my nose and look like rudolph the reindeer. it's horrible.

the acne between chin and mouth is very severe too...

any advice?
