So I have decided to log my progress in creating my own products. I am very proud of what I have accomplished, and I think it will be fun to tell you what I'm working on, and to get your opinions.

O.K. Thus far I have just barely fine tuned and completely finished five products! A cleanser, a toner, a moisturizer, an eye cream, and a body lotion.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The cleanser is an easy to use formula inspired by the oil cleansing method
http://www.acne.org/messageboard/OIL-CLEAN...Hi-t141871.html

It contains: Grapeseed Oil, Castor Oil, Water, Redmond Clay, Soy Lecithin, Caprylyl glycol, phenoxyethanol, Xanthan Gum

I previously didn't have the clay in my cleanser. It was runny and kind of hard to work with. I tried thickening it with Emulsifying wax, which seemed nice, but it made my skin break out.

Adding the clay gave it a really nice texture. I thought that it would turn the cleanser gray, but it didn't. It's nice and creamy smile.gif

You know what's funny about my cleanser? I thought that I was special to have come up with something so different. I mean, cleansing your acne prone skin with oil in a cream? who's ever tried that?.... I'd never herd of Cold Cream! A large named company has been around since the 1920's selling cold cream, lol. The ingredients for it are pretty simple, but I don't agree with the bees wax, borax, and mineral oil.

I'm going to have my husband see if my cleanser will work for shaving with. He's kind of mad at me because he dry shaves, and he hates the texture of any sort of lotion, but he'll do it because he loves me <3 It worked well for shaving my legs, but I'm sure that shaving a thick beard is a lot different. I'll let you know how that turns out.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The Toner is a milky rose water with Apple Cider Vinegar. The pH of it is at about 4.

It contains: Water, Apple Cider Vinegar, Soy Lecithin, Grape Seed Oil, Caprylyl glycol, phenoxyethanol, Xanthan Gum, Rose Essential Oil

I chose ACV because it's an old time remedy for about everything (I don't believe it's a cure all, but it does wonders for a bright complexion). ACV contains two or three different AHA's, the most apparent being malic acid from the apples. However, ACV is mostly made up of acetic acid which, unfortunately, is quite pungent! When I dilute it and add the rose oil, it hardly smells at all wink.gif

--------------------------------------------------------------

The moisturizer was my first creation. When my dermatologist told me at 15 that I could put Extra Virgin Olive Oil on my face and it would only help, I thought he was crazy! It seems like every product that has to do with acne prone skin is 'oil free'... but I tried it, and to my surprise it made my skin the smoothest that I could ever remember. It got rid of all those useless bumps and helped to calm my skin. However, EVOO is quite thick and uncomfortable to use straight from the bottle every night. It wasn't till I created my moisturizer with the perfect ingredients and proportions, that I saw the largest change in my complexion.

It contains: Water, Jojoba Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Water, Vegetable Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Soy Lecithin, Triethanolamine, Carbomer, Caprylyl glycol, phenoxyethanol, Lavender Essential Oil

I previously was using aloe vera instead of water, but then I was surprised to find out that many people are actually allergic to it, and so I have chosen not to include it in my formula. I only wish that I could do without the xanthan gum and soy lecithin... soy is as common of an allergen as peanut butter, and a good amount of people are allergic to xanthan gum... but alas, I can't do without these two ingredients in my formulations because they make the feel of the final product very desirable.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My eye cream was an unexpected find; it was a facial cream flop, but it ended up working perfectly for under my eyes. I have actually never used any other eye cream (I had never saw the use for them) but now that I'm the mother of a one year old, and trying to start a business, I was happy to find a treatment for puffy baggy eyes by using Rosemary and Fennel Essential Oils.

It contains: Water, Jojoba Oil, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Caprylyl glycol, phenoxyethanol, Rosemary Essential Oil, Fennel Essential Oil

I may try grape seed oil instead of jojoba oil and see if I like it better, but I don''t know. I'm really happy with how it is now. However, I'm having issues with my jars. They are ½ oz cobalt blue glass jars with gold rimmed caps; I think they're gorgeous, but most other people seem to think that gold is yuck sad.gif So I have ordered silver matt rimmed caps instead, and then I'll take new photos (which is such a pain in the rear!) and hopefully I'll actually make an eye cream sell on the net.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My body lotion is my most resent accomplishment. I originally wasn't interested in creating a hand and body lotion because I was perfectly happy with Aveeno. But this winter, my knuckle cracked, and it was horrible! I'd never had that happen before. It was persistent for two months till I went to Cozumel, Mexico in February and the humidity healed it right up... but then I came back home and it cracked open again. So I decided that if I wanted something done right, then I'd have to do it myself.

It contains: Water, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Emulsifying Wax, Grape Seed Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Soy Lecithin, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer 940, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol

My knuckle healed up in about three weeks. It's a pretty simple formula. I used e-wax (every home crafters best friend) and I finished it in a day. I don't have bottles for it yet though. I spent a couple of hours the other day deciding which bottles to use, and I eventually chose not to use a fancy bottle. The best bottle for my hand cream is an easy to use 8 oz flip top semi clear bottle. It is functional and will help keep cost down.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I've probably bored the heck out of ya by now. So I'll give it a rest for the night, and fill you in on what I'm currently working on, later. Please ask me any questions that you may have. I'd be more than happy to explain my views on skin care to you. I believe that my advice can be quite useful.

My family doesn't believe that I can grow a successful business, and it really hurts my feelings some times sad.gif They never use to support my interest in creating skin care at all, they just thought I was crazy. Now that I'm going be a vendor at two local Farmers Markets a week this summer, my family thinks it's great, but when I talk about my business hopefully growing (and that I day dream of owning a home in the future) they just kind of roll there eyes... Cause my husband should be the bread winner you know.

I can remember when I was in high school I had a passion for gemstones and jewelry, and I told my dad that I wanted to be a jeweler. He told me to get my head out of the f***ing clouds! It's like anything out of their norm is not acceptable.

Anyway, I'm happy to say that I've made my first international sail to Ontario Canada smile.gif She is also my first customer to buy my cleanser, and my eye cream! I hope that she will have good things to say about them...

This last week I have been working on a hair care bar. My idea is that it will be a cleanser and a conditioner in a semi-soft, solid form. I think that this would be nice, because then people wouldn't be paying extra for a bunch of water, two products, and a fancy bottle. I have tried varying proportions of Emulsifying wax (which contains cetearyl alcohol and will gently cleanse the hair) and grape seed oil (to condition and make the e-wax usable, since e-wax is a hard solid) but to no avail. It cleansed my hair when I had more e-wax (but was too hard) and when I added more grape seed oil it didn't cleanse my hair at all! There is an ingredient missing, and I don't know what it is yet. Therefor I will put this project on the back burner for a year or so and I'm sure I will come across that missing ingredient for the base of this product.

So I came up with a really good exfoliating mask the other week. It's kinda creamy and not messy. I used Redmond Clay, Soy, Grapeseed Oil, and crushed walnut shell. I don't think I'll offer an exfoliator in my skin care line though. It seems to me that many people over exfoliate, which isn't good; especially if you have acne prone skin. I used the mask, and then had a break out over the next week from irritation sad.gif

I'm grateful to finally have a clear complexion, but it stinks that I keep thinking I have normal skin. Because when I do something like waxing, exfoliating, or skipping my regimen, I break out!

I'm in California enjoying the beautiful sunny weather this week cool.gif At home in Utah there is still snow! I believe that sunscreen is a never ending quest... I have been using the equate brand of 50 spf for kids, and it's alright, but no where near perfect! I will have to work on a sunscreen solution after the summer if I do well.

I talked to my mom, and she will loan me the money I need to be ready for selling my skin care this summer!!! The farmers markets don't start till July, so as soon as I get my bottles and lables, there is a local Health Food Store that is going to let me do a booth. I'm gonna try to get in there once a week till July, and then once or twice a moth. I will try to nagotiate giving them 30% of my sales without paying a booth fee, and I'm sure that if my product sale well, then they will want to buy from me to carry it in both of their stores...

Thanks! I'm always fishing for compliments and encouragement, lol wink.gif

So something kinda funny happened today; I went to IHOP with my family, and decided to do something I haven't done for years. I ordered plain soda water, and then used my creamers and strawberry syrup to make an Italian soda... My family looked at me like I was doing something totally embarrassing, and my dad was like "Your addicted to mixing things aren't you?". I thought it was funny because I have been itching to get home and back to messing around, I mean working... he he.

I have a few ideas that I just wanted to jot down real quick:

-I remember seeing a grease wipe made from concentrated orange peel oil/extract to gently remove tough grease; maybe I can incorporate something like this into the hair care bar.

-Vegetable glycerin did not mix into the bar. It just settled at the bottom of the mold, while the bar cooled, and made a mess. I think I'll try honey and/or agave nectar to see if the sugars will mix in and help the bar to be more soft.

I'm way excited! I have ordered my BP and bottles smile.gif They'll get here within two weeks, and then I'll actually have something to do!

When my acne moisturizer is done I'm going to have it tested by several people with severe acne, so hopefully I'll have some before and after photos to show by the end of the summer...

I got my bottles today! Now I can prepare my skin conditioner to be put on my website eusa_dance.gif I have 8oz natural plastic squeeze bottles (with a white flip top) for this product. They're not real pretty like my other bottles, but they are cheep and will allow me to keep the cost down to $8.

What I have for my cleanser is a 4oz, cobalt blue, plastic squeeze bottle with a black disk cap; my toner is an 8oz, cobalt blue, glass bottle with a black cap; my moisturizer is a 4oz, cobalt blue, glass bottle with a black lotion pump; and my eye cream is a .5 oz, cobalt blue, glass jar with a silver matte ridged lid.

Yesterday I made a cool gift for my sister-in-law. She loves Coca-Cola stuff so I turned a glass Coca-Cola bottle into a lotion dispenser, I even used a straw wink.gif Here's a photo of it...

I am thinking of adding Rosemary Essential Oil to my cleanser. I'm not sure if I'll like it though cause I'm not fond of Rosemary by it's self, it's kind of a strong EO. Maybe If I only use one or two drops per 4oz it won't be over powering. Also, my toner needs a stronger oil than just Rose EO, Apple Cider Vinegar is just too pungent! I think that Rosemary and lavender EO's will work well for my toner. I also think that it'll be a good transition to go from Rosemary in my cleanser, to Rosemary and Lavender in my toner, and then to Lavender in my moisturizer. This should tie my products together nicely.

I filled the coke bottle last night. I added cornstarch to my skin conditioner because my sister in law complains of sweaty palms (I saw her putting on lotion a while ago and she use the back of her hands to apply it). I hope that she will be able to use this formula without having sweaty hands...

I think it looks pretty cool filled up, I have posted a photo of it.

I mixed up my products with the essential oils specified above, and I do like them. I'm gonna give them time to settle (over time the products change slightly), and then I'll decide if it will be a permanent change.

I received my Benzoyl Peroxide the other day. Pure benzoyl peroxide is a white grainy powder. To make it a fine powder it has to be milled. When pure BP is dry it is unstable and can be explosive, and so therefore should not be milled dry.

My first attempt at milling the BP didn't work. I tried adding the correct proportions of BP to my pre-gel, and then used a hand grinder (a ceramic one I got from the health food store, used for crushing herbs) to try and grind the BP. It was messy and hardly any of it ground up.

Next I tried adding a small amount of water to the BP, ground it into a paste, and then added my pre-gel to it. It worked pretty well. I mixed it with other ingredients to produce a 2.5% BP Moisturizer, and then I tried it. There were only like three grainy parts of BP in one pump of the lotion. I will have to mill it more thoroughly next time.

Today I made a thin 30% BP gel to use in my acne free moisturizer... I just mixed it up in the blender, and it worked great! It was a smooth even texture, and now my 2.5% BP acne moisturizer is perfect!!!

I am going to talk to my teenage guy cousin and see if he will test my 3 step acne system for me. He has mild to moderate acne on his cheeks and chin. He will have to let me know if the creamy cleanser works for shaving with a razor, and I'm hoping that he will do an online acne log so that acne.org can see his progress as well.

Oh, and I made a few minor changes to the ingredients on my first post as well as finished two new products. So when I have more time I will update that for ya.

I'm so excited, if all goes well I am going to make an appointment with my dermatologist to show him my products!

Wish me luck eusa_dance.gif

Last week I set up my first shelf in a store! Tue. I'm gonna put the finishing touches on it, and see if maybe I sold something... I'll take a picture of it to show everyone.

I have two skin care appointments tomorrow! I just know that they'll love my product... I sure need to make some money soon because stocking my shelf made me run out of allot of supplies!

Also on Tue, I am sending product to a friend I met on acne.org, and he is going to test my Acne Trio for me smile.gif He is going to keep an online acne log about his experience and will send me photos for advertising. However, he isn't comfortable posting photos online, but that's OK; maybe when he's clear he will...

Yep, sunscreen is next on my list, but that will have to be next year. Thanks for your compliments, it really helps me keep going smile.gif
