This is kind of an odd question-did people have acne hundreds of years ago?
I always wonder if it's caused by the pollution and bad food we eat now...

Yes they did, definitely.

Quote - "The history of acne reaches back to the dawn of recorded history. In Ancient Egypt, it is recorded that several pharaohs were acne sufferers. From Ancient Greece comes the English word 'acne' (meaning 'point' or 'peak'). Acne treatments are also of considerable antiquity:
Ancient Rome: bathing in hot, and often sulfurous, mineral water was one of the few available acne treatments. One of the earliest texts to mention skin problems is De Medicina by the Roman writer Celsus." (Source - Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acne_vulgaris )

^^ How interesting. It's kinda cool to think we share the same skin condition like ancient pharaohs have...

I just guessed. I think acne is a result of western civilizations food. The processes it goes through, artificial hormones, preservatives, coloring, chemicals... etc. Both my parents grew up in a rural part of mexico where they grew all their own food in the farms they lived in and ate all natural food. They both tell me that neither of them, nor their brothers & sisters or even classmates ever suffered from acne.

red2528 is right. My parents never had acne and the few people they knew who had acne never had it as bad or for as long as some of the kids they see here in the US. My parents grew up in China in an urban but very poor area and most people then and there ate mainly fish and rice. Things as meager to us as bread and meat were an expensive and usually unaffordable indulgence. I realized this connection only a year ago and I have cut down on my fatty and gluten rich intake. I still get breakouts every now and then--that's why I'm still here, in addition to the scars left by acne--but my acne is largely under controlled.

That still doesn't mean that humans did not have acne hundreds and hundreds of years ago, because they did.

I know after examining the remains of Ramses the second they discovered he suffered from acne and and he lived like 3 thousand years ago!! Humans haven't really changed much over the years, i'm sure acne was just as bad back then.

Yes, I have also read that acne has existed in the oldest civilizations. Considering that acne is not really an attractive quality, the fact that people with acne were able to reproduce so much and pass on their genes must mean that they had something else which was really good, and their potential mates ignored their acne. The testosterone surge and the risk taking ability which comes from it may have something to do with it. Also people until even 100 years back had to constantly fight wars for their survival, so this excess testosterone might have been an attractive and beneficial quality then.

Dickens describes a character, Herbert Pocket, in Great Expectations (published in 1860) as being "pimple-faced"... my guess is, yes, acne has been around for quite some time. However, I do believe we're more obsessed with body image these days than people were back then.

I'm sure they suffered from it just a little bit...It's nothing like we have it today.I think it's due to the American diet. I read in an article several times that acne is less of a problem in countries that have healthier diets, such as Asian countries (Japan, China, etc).

I think they believe King Tut had acne and it was believed they used honey to treat it.
