I was diagnosed as being vitamin D insufficient with a level of 29 almost a month ago and have been taking 4000 i/u of D3 per day - although the Naturopath I started seeing today recommended that I bump that up to 8000 per day.

By day 17, my skin tone started to get much better and my breakouts were less severe and healed much quicker. Today on Day 22 my skin is about 80% clear and what's there is pretty minor compared to the deep and large breakouts I was having.

I have to take this heavy dosage for 3 months, recheck my levels and then come down to a maintenance dose if I've reached a good level.

I had no idea that Vitamin D was processed by your body into a hormone until I found out I was insufficient and did all this research. Plus, I have to give the medical community *some* credit for at least being open minded and smart enough to test for this in the past 2ish years or so.

However, I should add that I was tested not by a dermatologist but by a rheumatoid doctor because of other problems I've been having.

So, get your Vitamin D levels tested - if your dermatologist won't do it, then ask your primary care physician...either way, most people are deficient from what I've heard. But it's important to know what your level is in order to take the right dosage and to know when to taper off to a normal maintenance level...and a doctor is the best person to tell you that.

I just wouldn't necessarily say to a doctor that it's to 'cure your acne' because they might resist - some doctors think vitamin d is the next 'bandwagon' but it's not. Just tell your doctor to test your vitamin d firmly as a cautionary measure. Low vitamin D also leads to higher risk of autoimmune diseases like MS, bone problems like osteoporosis, since Calcium *needs* vitamin D to be able to do its work. I've read that once your body processes it into a hormone, it can affect up to 200 parts of your system.

hey after reading your post and getting a low-vitamin D diagnosis from my PCP, i think i'm going to try taking 4000 iu's of vitamin D daily.

I have 2 questions though:

did you take all 4 tablets at once or spread them out throughout the day?

also, did you experience any negative side effects from taking high doses of vitamin D?

thanks

Do not take tablets. Only take softgels and only take D3. They are much better absorbed.

I take 10,000 IU per day. I have no side effects. You can take your dose separate or all at once. I do all at once. Some people even take 50,000 IU once per WEEK.

Vitamin D is necessary for so many things and most Americans are said to be deficient.

Here is a great article about Vitamin D http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/...in-d-right.html

This might be true, i had horrible cystic acne in july last year.. Thats when i got my blood tested for hormonal imbalance and vitamin defficiencies. It turned out that i was dangerously vit D defficient and was prescribed to take 30 micro gram for a few months (5 months). Now i just take 10 micro gram. My acne is gone. I just get those cute little white pimples which goes away without any infection and without leaving a scar (if you know what kind of spot im talking about).

SO yes i can confirm my acne healed by taking vit D. I also take Vit b complex tablet each day too.

Also seems to be working for me, among other things, but vitamin d3 was I *think* the straw that broke my acne's back. Har Har. See my log for details in signature.

I started taking 2k IU a day of vitamin D3 tablets, so I am hoping it'll help my skin...probably should get my levels checked out though.

So frustrated and disappointed that it didn't work... just ordered the liquid ones. Shall experiment with them next week and see how it goes... sigh. And I think I overdosed the other time o.o
