I know that when you log in it will tell you if there is any new posts that have been added to a topic you have started, but is there a function that I'm overlooking that allows you to easily see new posts added to a topic that you haven't started but have participated in? I'm finding it quite tedious navigating through my last 10 posts trying to see if anything has been added by other people to them. And also is there a way to see posts you have made outside of the last 10 that I'm not figuring out?

If you look in the upper right corner of the first post of any thread (to the right of the thread's title), there's a little drop-down menu that says 'Options'. If you open that, there's a 'Track this topic' option. Click on that, and it'll give you several options for tracking the topic and ways to get notified of new posts.
