bryan:

So are you trying to say that complex carbs are the same as simple? I don't really get what you are arguing against.

By the way, complex carbs do enter the bloodstream slower.

"There are also complex carbohydrates, commonly known as "starches." A complex carbohydrate is made up of chains of glucose molecules. Starches are the way plants store energy -- plants produce glucose and chain the glucose molecules together to form starch. Most grains (wheat, corn, oats, rice) and things like potatoes and plantains are high in starch. Your digestive system breaks a complex carbohydrate (starch) back down into its component glucose molecules so that the glucose can enter your bloodstream. It takes a lot longer to break down a starch, however. If you drink a can of soda full of sugar, glucose will enter the bloodstream at a rate of something like 30 calories per minute. A complex carbohydrate is digested more slowly, so glucose enters the bloodstream at a rate of only 2 calories per minute (reference)."

I'm saying that it's pointless to make overly-broad statements about "simple" and "complex" carbs in general. You need to be careful and specify WHICH "simple" and WHICH "complex" carb you're talking about.

Really? Then why is it that a baked potato and various other "complex carbs" (including bread, among other things) can have higher glycemic indexes than, say, the simple sugar sucrose (common table sugar)?

Actually, a baked potato is higher than table sugar, but whole wheat bread is not.

http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/questions...atoglycemic.htm

I guess potatoes are a special case.

At least that author was honest enough to point out that there's a fair amount of variation from one glycemic index list to the next; but I think she was laughably dishonest to try to sweep it all under the rug by saying that "The reason is not totally known, but a strong possibility is because the starch in potatoes, indeed all starch, is made up of long strings of glucose." She has the astonishing chutzpah to say that with a straight face, after so many people have been told that IT'S THAT VERY COMPLEXITY ITSELF which (supposedly) causes complex carbs to be slowly aborbed??!! smile.gif eusa_doh.gif Do you see the incredible irony in such a two-faced statement as that?? eusa_wall.gif

Here's a list of some sample glycemic indexes from a diet book I have (based on the glucose = 100 scale):

sucrose 59

white bread 69
whole wheat bread 72
brown rice 66
white rice 72
cornflakes 80
shredded wheat 67
potato, instant mashed 80
potato, russet, baked 98
potato, white 70

So much for the "complex carbs are absorbed MUCH more slowly than simple carbs" concept! smile.gif

i would call it candida in my case at least, because i can actually see it in my stools.

You can see actual yeast cells in your stool? Man, I thought I was dedicated. Well, so long as you don't actually hear them talking to you, I guess you're probably OK. biggrin.gif

Yea I had similar thoughts. I love when people diagnose themselves and create evidence for themselves.

lol you guys crack me up. i'm not even going to argue, i'm just a delusional idiot. i'll just post my before and after pics when i'm done, and i'll dedicate them to all the flamers out there.

Yep, these people can be harsh sometimes just because they don't have the bone to follow a dietary regimen (even though they go through a complex accord of creams in the morning/night). That or they have tried the wrong regimen. I still think the main problem is sugar control and inflammation rather than candida.

I tried Paleo for 6 months and a strict low fat diet for 4 months. Neither cured my acne.

I would also appreciate not being called a "flamer."

If you guys could provide any concrete evidence that would help your case a lot.

Did it make it better? We have been damaging our body for years, 6 months might not due the trick, but w/e, I am sure that if you follow a reasonable diet you'll still get many benefits.

If you want evidence you can read the studies at the top of the forum along with all of alternativista's contributions.

I don't doubt the acne diet connection. I doubt that diet completely causes/cures acne, and I doubt candida in the majority of people who claim they have it.

by ALL carbs do you mean consuming zero carbs?

I wouldn't advise that. I'm sure the body needs all three macronutrients (protein, fat, carbs)

But the reasoning behind a Low Carb diet is because Carbohydrates have a higher POTENTIAL to cause inflammation compared to protein and fat. (Please don't confuse dietary fat with body fat...the two are hardly related)

And yes there are plenty of beneficial results from a diet like this.

check out Sugar Free Sheila (...wow...)
or check out Jimmy Moore
or check out Mark Sisson

check out those sites.
there's tons of people that have had success on a low carb diet. Is that enough evidence?
Is it the end all/be all of diets? no. If it doesn't fit you then it doesn't fit you.
But maybe all that bread, pizza, pasta, cereal, rice, fries, potatoes, bagels, muffins, and granola is why you have acne?

Also, to those who tried going low carb and then "Added carbs back" by "adding whole grain carbs".
Whats wrong with adding more fruits and veggies instead? those have carbohydrates.

And to those people that don't "believe" candida exists...or that it was something made up by a shaman or witch doctor or mystical monk living in solitude somewhere high in the Himalayas....I can understand your skepticism. Especially since most doctors in the US don't really recognize it as something to worry about. And that's fine. HOWEVER,.....if you're going to dismiss it completely, what is your "concrete evidence" that it absolutely doesn't exist?

overall, I don't think someone HAS TO go Low Carb to cure their acne...I just think that once you eat fewer processed foods and less insulin spiking foods, you'll probably find yourself eating few carbs by accident.

I love how you assume I eat french fries, pizza, cereal, muffins, bagels, bread, pasta, and granola. I love how you post links of people who lost weight on a low carb diet. (It's not that hard to figure out that lowering your calories will cause you to loose weight, you can do this on a low fat diet as well) I love how you assume I believe Candida is a myth or doesn't exist, when I simply said self diagnosis isn't the best way to go about things.

Sorry, The post wasn't addressed to you. Or anyone specific for that matter.
I didn't assume anything.
Most people who are eating a lot of carbs are eating these types of carbs. The typical American diet. From personal experience, I used to eat cereal everyday for breakfast, with Non-fat milk. That's pure carbs and sugar and lactose (milk sugar).
The links provided were to show that "there are plenty of beneficial results from a diet like this."
Many people gain their weight back after a low fat diet because they find it unsustainable.
For instance....many people on "The Biggest Loser" tv show gain weight back.
But I wasn't trying to show weight loss (usually not a concern on this site) but just a picture of overall health from following a LC lifestyle.
You're right about people self-diagnosing. I think everyone's a little guilty of it from time to time.
But I think it runs rampant so much on these boards because acne is such a frustrating thing to deal with. It's a symptom of something else. And with so many differing success stories & strategies, it's hard to know what to do without the tests, blood work, hair mineral analysis, saliva testing, etc. Then again sometimes some of these success stories on here were because of trial and error.

According to this article www(dot)ehow(dot)com/way_5538778_proven-ways-rid-pimples)dot html there are non-Westernized societies that are/were COMPLETELY acne-free simply because they eat a low-glycemic diet.

Yeah, Kitava and Aches are two examples Dr. Cordain et al. use. They have a high carb diet, still no acne.

You mean workouts that involve screaming in pain and vomiting? I don't get why anyone finds that show inspiring.

And the very premise is horrible. They kick people off for not losing enough??? And why would you do so much weight training in a competition judged by a scale? On top of all that, they are on some kind of beachfront ranch. They should go out and walk on the beach, not lift weights until they vomit.
