So I got a prescription for this today. The doc told me to apply it morning and evening. In the morning, is it ok to apply it, and then wash it off after an hour or so? How long does it take for it to penetrate and do its work before it can be washed off? I don't want to put my makeup over this stuff as its going to be very drying.

this is just for pure antibiotics, i'm not much sure for benzamycin knowing it has benzoyl peroxide and erythromycin as a combi gel, you may want to read this site:

http://www.bioskinclear.com/acnemedicine/

(You can just wash your face with the standard twice a day, maybe you can ask your derm if u can use a moisturizer if it's too drying for you.. Your medication has to be applied on a cleansed face, if you're going to wash the medication off after some point, you're doing more than the standard twice a day washing and the medication has to stay for more than an hour. You have to give time for it to go deep, not only on the surface, otherwise try opting for an oral medicine or open it up to your derm next time you visit)

Actually I am using oral erythryomycin tablets for 5 months now and its working really well. My skin is much less oily and hardly break out anymore. But I don't want to become resistant to the erythyromycin and I read that if you use BP as well, you don't since bacteria don't know yet how to prevent oxidation. But the benzamycin is leaving white patches on my skin and I can't wear this under my makeup. So I was wondering if I can put it on in the morning and then wash it off after an hour or so, before heading out. I called the pharmacist and she said it absorbs right away after putting it and I can certainly wash it off after an hour.
I will probably keep it on the whole night though.

that's nice that you can wash it off in an hour or so (i was thinking open skin and intact skin, because intact skin takes a while for absorption)..=) I have white patches too, but it's from the BP im using, some part of the skin hasn't peeled off yet so they're still light brown. I've given up my erythro oral meds, they weren't very effective for me. But the BP is.. very much so. TC=)

Have you only been taking erythromycin or have you used other medicines as well? From what I know, erythromycin is an antibiotic--so the only job it does is kill bacteria and prevent breakouts, it has no effect on oil production. Have you used oil control products as well?

In additon to killing bacteria, it is also an inflammatory. And I believe acne is caused by inflammation since everyone has p.acnes bacteria on their skin but they don't get acne. I believe the p.acnes bacteria on acne prone skin release inflammatory substances and that makes the skin to produce more oil. I don't know how, but erythyromycin has greatly reduced my oil production. Earlier I would get oily in 2 hours after washing my face, but now I don't get oily and maybe just a bit shiny on my forehead after 5-6 hours. So that is a great improvement for me (touch wood!) I have been taking it for a year already.
