Thanks again for your input willow.

I thought it was strange that some said it caused burning and dryness. Maybe the pH of there Niacinamide isnt right. Anything outside of a pH of 5-7 will undergo hydrolysis and turn into nicotinic acid I believe it was. When that happens I read it can cause burning, flushing and flakiness.

Plus a number of places and derms have said to use Niacinamide creams topicals with retinoid usage to offset the irritation and skin barrier disruption retinoids create.

** Willow did/do you have oily skin? If so did niacinamide topcial help with that at all?

I am oily in my t-zone - especially around my chin and mouth areas. I haven't noticed any change in oiliness with the Metazine Gel though.

We are giving this a try after it was recommened to us by another person:

Wash with a mild cleanser (they used Cetaphil but could also use DK Cleanser) and then apply 4% niacinamide gel at night and in the morning.

We were able to get the 4% niaminacide gel from a pharmacy called Cox Pharmacy (no prescription needed). Google it and you will find it. They sell a jar of the gel that will last you a good two months (since you only need a dime size amount) for $10.00

Easier than making it yourself. The compounding tech there was AWESOME and she gave me lots of success stories about people using the gel. She has worked there over 20 years and she said people order it from all over.

We have tried it all - so we will let you know how this goes -

waiting for our miracle .....

Keep us posted on how it works! Good to know that there is another source for niacinamide products.

I'm still using it. I like it on the whole, but it takes a while to rub in (maybe I'm using too much, but I panic when I get a couple of spots, thinking my skin is going to explode).

It's not 100% effective for me, and it doesn't seem to lighten my face or reduce the appearance of red marks. It's also quite expensive compared to BP, although isn't as aggravating and it doesn't bleach clothes.

Thank you! What type of acne are you prone to? How long have you used this stuff? And do you make it yourself or buy metazine?

I've not had untreated skin for close to 8 years so I don't know how bad my acne really is. And I'm not prepared to stop treating it to find out.

I've used it for around 8 months now. At first I used it at the same time as BP, but gradually I reduced and eliminated the BP and increased the nicotinamide.

I buy a gel called "Nicam Gel" which is also marketed as "Freederm" here in the UK. I haven't tried making my own, but the only niacinamide I can find are tablets which contain a number of other ingredients.

Anyone still using the metazene? Or used it in the past, and can comment on how well it worked?

Can this 5% metazene gel be used in conjuction with 500 mg of no flush niacin? Or will that be too much?

Some people experience flushing with oral or topical niacinamide, for others it does the opposite. Its sort of a YMMV thing. I stopped using it for awhile because I was getting irritation from my skin care regimen and wanted to take out any possible culprits. I found out it was something else, so I recently started using the Metazine gel again (about 6 wks ago) and I really love the results I am getting. When I use it, I can get away with using just a light gel moisturizer and my skin stays nice and hydrated. Its been great for me.

It was too hard for me to find a 5% niacinamide gel, so I'm going to try to make my own. I ordered the niacinamide from a bulk ingredients site and I'm using aloe vera as the solvent. I haven't gotten it yet, but when I do I'll let you know how it goes...

Be careful with making sure you get the right ph for the ingredient - it can be a little tricky to get proportions right sometimes. If you want some good DIY niacinamide recipes, check out either makeupalley.com or skincaretalk.com.

I finally got all the ingredients, and made a ~4% niacinamide gel with an aloe vera base (used lily of the desert's 99% aloe). It has a really goopy, thick consistency but my skin absorbed it in a couple minutes. I'll keep you posted about how it works for me!
