I just started using RAM .04%, doxycycline, and Dove sensitive skin soap bar on August 26th (so about a week and a half ago). I also just added Dan's moisturizer to my regime earlier this week. As of now, I've only used the RAM 3 times because I am only using it on Wednesday and Saturday nights to start slowly. My derm recommended using it on M, W, and F, but after reading stories I chose to start a little slower with two times a week. My skin is getting flaky at this point, but Dan's moisturizer is a miracle and gets rid of the flakes so my makeup can go on...but it is a little too oily for a day moisturzer, so I don't know what I'm going to do. But my skin has already started clearing a bit...few breakouts just my scars seem more prominent. I'm waiting for the IB!!
But my main question here is...do you think that using the RAM only 2-3 days a week, period, is ok? As in, I will never use it nightly? I'm wanting progress to be relatively slow, so that I can avoid the crazy redness, peeling, and breakouts that others have had. But I am getting married in approx. 9 months and want to make sure I'm clear within 6 so that I can have time to stop using the RAM as much to keep my skin from being too sensitive to the sun (can't wear sunscreen the day of and it's an outdoor wedding).
Has anyone used it slowly like this? I understand I CAN progress to nightly, but worry that that will be too often for me.
Any feedback would be great! Thanks!
My esthetician recommended I use tretinoin (generic of retin-a) every three days to avoid redness and irritation. My doctor said it's okay to use it like that, but it's more effective when used nightly, or at least 5-6 days a week... so I'd say use it in the way you're most comfortable... though twice a week might not be quite often enough if that's as often as you ever plan to use it...
Are you saying you'd like to use the RAM for six months and then discontinue it? RAM is only effective so long as you use it... your skin will go back to how it was before you used the RAM when you discontinue it... and your skin will be more sensitive to the sun so long as you use it (assuming you're still using a sufficient amount, frequently enough, for it to be effective), even if you're just using it at night and not as often... (sun sensitivity is related to the reaction of the retinoid to sunlight, as well as the physical effects/changes of the retinoid on your skin)... you sure you can't wear sunscreen at your wedding? Maybe a sunscreen that's matte?
Did you talk to your derm about your weding plans and concerns? If sun sensitivity is a deal breaker for you with the RAM, maybe a different topical would be better for you?
