Inositol seems to be effective in the treatment of PCOS and acne

QUOTE
Gynecol Endocrinol. 2009 Jun 23:1-6.

Efficacy of myo-Inositol in the treatment of cutaneous disorders in young women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Zacche MM, Caputo L, Filippis S, Zacche G, Dindelli M, Ferrari A.

Gynecological-Obstetric Department, IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, Vita-Salute University, Milan, Italy.

Background. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine cause of hirsutism, acne and pattern alopecia, often characterised by ovulation disorders (usually manifested as oligo- or amenorrhea). In addition, 30-40% of women with PCOS have impaired glucose tolerance, and a defect in the insulin signalling pathway seems to be implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. For this reason, insulin-lowering medications represent novel approach in women with PCOS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of myo-Inositol (MYO), an isoform of inositol, belonging to the vitamin B complex, in the treatment of cutaneous disorders like hirsutism and acne. Methods. Fifty patients with PCOS were enrolled in the study. BMI, LH, FSH, insulin, HOMA index, androstenedione, testosterone, free testosterone, hirsutism and acne were evaluated at the baseline and after receiving MYO therapy for 6 months. Results. After 3 months of MYO administration, plasma LH, testosterone, free testosterone, insulin and HOMA index resulted significantly reduced; no significant changes were observed in plasma FSH and androstenedione levels. Both hirsutism and acne decreased after 6 months of therapy. Discussion. MYO administration is a simple and safe treatment that ameliorates the metabolic profile of patients with PCOS, reducing hirsutism and acne.

i have been taking 650mg/ 3 times a day of inositol for a month now. i also have been taking 1000mg of vitex to help with estrogen dominance for about 6 months now. i have been happy with the results of the vitex, no more nasty cyst, but i still get a few non inflamed pimples and some red spots just before the end of my monthly cycle. i have been researching inositol on the PCOS boards and many women there have had success with it helping with acne. i also got interested in inositol since it is a supplement that can help with OCD behaviors. i have always been a skin picker and end up making my face worse by picking and prodding at imperfections that might not even be that noticeable in the first place to anyone else, just to me.

since starting the inositol, i have noticed a decrease in oiliness in my T zone. any pimples that have popped up, seem to go away in just a few days if i leave them alone (this is something that usually would take a week or more in the past) and they do not seem as inflamed. i also do not feel that strong "urge" that i have to examine my face looking for any imperfections to pick at. i seem content looking at it and just leaving it. not sure if this is due to the inositol, or if it is more of a placebo effect. i know that when they treat OCD with inositol that people are taking excessive amounts, much more then i am. anyways, it seems to be helping.
