ive been washing twice daily with cetaphil gentle cleanser using nothing else on my skin but my skin has been really dry lately. I dont want to use a moisturizer because i suspect that it might have led to my current clogged pores but i dont want me having dry skin to cause anymore..should i not wash as often or not use a cleanser?

During the very first time clogged pores started for me around the nostrils, i remember using cetaphil cleanser and i remember the area around the nostrils stinging... maybe it's related somehow but the memory is blurry.

now... cetaphil cleanser does do a great job off getting the oils of the skin, i guess both the good and the bad oils, but do not use it regularly or in great amounts. Make a foam with your hands first and then gently rub on face and wash with warm water...

I would avoid cetaphil, you don't need it unless you think you have very oily skin and that oilyness won't go away with just water/showering.

if it is drying out your skin stop using it, or try using less

what do you mean by good and bad oils?

if your skin is dry YOU SHOULD BE USING A MOISTURIZER!!!!!!!dry skin will cause acne....im almost convinced that it is the sole cause of acne........if youre using cetaphil moisturizer, it will not cause breakouts....if your face is that dry then try washing it maybe once a day, but id reccommend using a topical treatment 2x/day followed up by moisturizer......it should work well..

its not absurdly dry but just slightly dry..I had no comedonal acne until about 5 months ago n then had a bunch only one the left side of my face. I was on duac which made my skin really dry so i used a moistuizer which i beleieve caused me to get more clogged pores. I stopped using everything about 4 weeks ago and have seen most of the pores clear up via inflammed breakouts. Howver, i still hve 10-15 visible ones. I just dont want my dry skin to start causin more that will be visible in 2 weeks or something.....But i havent seen reaaly any signifcant clogged pores in the last 4 weeks so i dunno.

i use duac once a night....and it does dry out my skin pretty bad....so i know where youre coming from.....i really dont know why you would be afraid of using the moisturizer because as long as its noncommedogenic it wont clog your pores....and as long as your using duac or some kind of topical treatment, clogged pores won't contribute to acne...i thnk the only way pores get clogged is from dry, dead skin cellls .....ive noticed that acne is exacerbated by the excess oil that gets produced from overwashing and overdrying your skin....i did this a lot because i thought it was the answer but my face only got worse....hope you get it to work.

I agree, when the skin is dry there are cracks in the skin where acne can form, so to seal those cracks you need moisturizer to heal those dry areas. word of caution, pick the moisturizer wisely always read the ingredients.

Everyones skin is different. Some people dont need moisturizer or just prefer not to use it. Not moisturizing doesnt cause acne

No way, I have to totally disagree here. I don't think dry-skin causes acne, in my case anyhow. Just like the OP stated my moisturiser started half of the ****, waste of time it was.

Oil is the cause of acne imo, dry skin is better than nothing. Sure major dry skin is the cause of some, maybe the red spots which don't form into whiteheads, but from a guy's perspective moisturisers are a waste of time, they make my skin look and feel like crap

I'm glad im into a routine without one now, i think dry skin is something that can correlate to diet, and eating some good foods to combat this can do the trick.

Fact: dehydrated skin, oily or not, is more prone to comedone formation.

Best way to avoid dehydrated skin is to keep the acid mantle healthy. Take fish oil supplements, make sure your cleanser is at a pH between 5.5 and 6.5, don't over-cleanse or over-scrub your face.

Moisturizer may or may not be necessary. I no longer need to use one regularly, because my skin is healthy and well-balanced.

Personally I would highly recommend Shea Butter 100% Organic at night after cleansing your skin. Leave it on while you sleep (sometimes its really thick) for at least 8 hours so your skin fully hydrates.
I used to buy 'Aveeno Intense Relief Repair Cream' and it worked wonders, but it has comedogenic ingredients so I don't recommend it (sometimes it cost me breakouts but really small ones and sometimes it didn't). Just bought 'Out of Africa - Unscented Shea Butter' (organic) to see how it works. But trust me. You want to get rid of dry skin? Get Shea Butter.

For acne I use: Salycic Acid in the morning (sometimes just for spot treatment), and Sulfur Soap at night (love it, but has to be at night 'cause of the smell of rotten eggs. It works so whatever) and after that the Shea Butter.

Good luck smile.gif
