Yes, of course. A dermatologist interestingly told me once never to use antibacterials for that reason if I'm dealing comedones. The bacteria degrades the sebum to free fatty acids that stimulate the enzyme that sloughs out the comedones.

bryan, have you read research that free fatty acids stimulate protease enzymes that help stimulate cell sloughing? If there are no free fatty acids, then cells begin to pile up. This is a possible mechanism why sebum helps keep skin feeling more moisturized.

Hasn't the presence of free fatty acids in or on the skin (apparently produced by the enzymatic degradation of sebum by bacteria like P acnes) generally been considered a bad thing, by producing irritation and inflammation? smile.gif

Which bacteria are responsible for the degredation of sebum?

Aczone has worked for me as well....I juse jojoba oil to moisturize and it has been working for me really well. =)

Retin-a hasn't really been effective for me though.

I thought those free fatty acids were an essential part of the acid mantle?

Wouldn't that mean that the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet don't have an acid mantle? smile.gif

BTW, that's also an argument against the common assumption that so many people make that sebum is so damned important as a "moisturizer" in the skin. Our palms and soles don't have any sebum at all, but somehow they manage to get along okay without it.

i've moisturized everyday since i was 17. I'm am very into moisturizing - even with my oily skin. i love it. my skin is very soft and supple....around my acne.

hehe. i guess my point is that everyone's skin is different. over-drying the skin can lead to an increase in breakouts. but even when your skin is supper moisturized, some people still suffer from acne...

good luck to everyone!

Sorry but I find that strange. I mean what's the difference between having a layer of natural oil on your face and slapping on moisturizer?

I mean if you really wanted you could rub your face to work in the sebum? lol.

you made me vomit in my mouth a little with that last sentence. not the same at all. really gross. the oil on my skin is mostly removed when i wash my face, and then i apply aczone and my moisturizer which is very light and contains spf...very different from my natural oil production...makes my skin feel really healthy and clean.

STAY AWAY FROM ALL PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN DRUGS One of the most damaging FDA approved drug topicals i've came across on the internet is Aczone, it causes all sorts of problems, it causes redness, severe cystic acne, swelling, and many other skin disorders in test subjects. more info: http://www.rxlist.com/aczone-gel-drug.htm. I strongly advise not to use any products that contain drugs prescription or otherwise, products such as moisturizers, topicals, gels and oral medications. avoid these products at all costs:

Aczone, Differin, Tazorac, Retin-A, Doxycycline, the list goes on..

Oh no you did not just bash on the 3 things that have worked for me!
eusa_naughty.gif

Aczone: It does not cause all sorts of problems. Only in cases where people are allergic to the drug. Those test subjects don't apply to everyone, everyone has different skin if you haven't noticed. And if the drug was so bad, it wouldn't have been FDA approved. Aczone has worked miracles on me, have you used it for at least 2 months? You can't always trust everything you read online you know..

And why avoid products with prescriptions? Because they can work for someone?

Honestly Adam, you can really annoy me sometimes. Do you really think that just moisturizing and washing your skin will eliminate acne? If that was the case, none of us would have acne because those are two simple things that almost everyone does.

This is an interesting article but like the poster said himself, everyone's skin is different. I've been on the Regimen strictly for 2 months, with some AHA+ included, and my skin is completely acne free.

The AHA+ is good for elimating flakyness, but drinking water is definitely what's best for keeping my skin flake free.

I went to L'Bri website but couldn't find a way to order. Do you order from ebay or from another website?
Great article!
