I've been on spironolactone for a little over 2 months now and have noticed severe dark circles and puffiness under my eyes as a result. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so should I stop taking this med? It has worked wonders on my acne but I can't believe how severe the dark circles are though.

I am also taking herbs for anxiety and insomnia from my acupuncturist so am wondering if there is some weird reaction going on. And, I do suffer from allergies and sinusitis, but I've had these all of my life so am thinking that it's not related to this. Any experience with this or information related to this would be helpful!

Hi Pace

I don't have much in the way of answers but will share my experience on this. I have been on 25mg of spiro for 2 weeks tomorrow. I am 41 and have mild but persistent and stubborn hormonal pimples around my jawline and neck, and usually a PMS related breakout.

I also take Lexapro for my PMS mood swings, and a PMS supplement and a B6/Zinc.

So far so good, no fatigue, sweating, nausea. My skin is noticably dryer and much much clearer, the scars feel flatter and paler. Even on this low dose.

Incidentally on the doseage. I'm very sensitive to chemicals and rarely can take the standard recommended doses of pills as it seems a bit too much for me - I get all the bad side effects at the standard dose.

My skin feels rough to the touch and is a tiny bit red and itchy around my nose. By far the worst side effect has been waking up with majorly puffy eyes. It almost looks like I have fatty deposits under my eyes and my lids are all swollen too When the puff goes down I'm left with major dark circles.

I got my period on the weekend and this is usually a salt craving time for me - not surprisingly it was much worse over the weekend. I also had a few beers on Friday.

I think that this is a sign of major dehydration. As of yesterday I banished salt from my diet and have doubled my water intake. For the morning puffiness i put haemorroid cream(!) on my eyes for 10 mins or so while I eat my breakfast (it takes the puff right down) and before I shower.

If the salt free/extra water does not improve things help over the next few days i will either reduce my doseage or go see my doctor.

I also ate some potassium rich foods without realising in the last few days - not sure if that had anything to do with the puff

Hope this helps
