I just started Accutane yesterday (20 mg twice a day). I have been treating my face and back zits with just about every conceivable remedy on the planet for 23 years now. I have the cystic type of course, and am embarrassed by it, and nothing else helped much, but some of the other junk (like tetracycline and Benzoyl peroxide) helped a little sometimes. I went to dermatologists, and eventually got to the point where I was taking 5 skin medicines at once, 4 topical and Dynocin pills, and I was still getting cysts, blackheads, and whiteheads. I went to a different dermatologist and told her I wanted Accutane, detailed my history, and told her I would be a good candidate because I could not get pregnant since I had had my tubes tied. To my surprise she said yes!
So I did all the pregnancy tests, blood work, iPledge program, videos, questions, and all the rigamarole. I can't believe how hard it is for a woman who has had her tubes tied to get on Accutane! I wonder if they aren't going to pull it off the market, the way it is so tightly regulated. Especially since the side effects read like something from a horror movie. If my self esteem wasn't so negatively effected by my acne (and especially if my acne wasn't almost exclusively on my face), I wouldn't even consider this drug.
I am concerned about being on Accutane because I have both mental health issues and neurological conditions. My doctors are aware that I have started Accutane and my psychiatrist is monitoring me closely by scheduling appointments for me every two weeks during the course of my treatment. We'll see how it goes. I am cautiously optimistic that I might be able to get off this endless cycle of ineffective facial washes, scrubs, pills, foams, cleansers, strips, and on and on ad infinitum, all that promise miraculous, empty results. (Anyone heard of Proactiv?) Any suggestions or cautions that thou wise and seasoned posters have are appreciated. Thanks.

i am on proactiv right now and i will be starting my accutane treatment in 4 days. It's recommended that i should stop proactiv because it would cause my face to dry up really bad. proactive is too strong to be a cleanser and you should try a mild cleanser instead. besides, proactiv is about $45 for the 3-step acne treatment. hope things will work out for u. good luck

I just started accutane today! for the same reasons too. Except I break out on my scalp as well. I'm hoping this miracle drug works... I want to be comfortable in a tank top in the summer! We should compare notes as we go along! I'm just tired of everything i've been trying for 6 years!
