I'm currently weaning off spiro (stepping down to avoid a big breakout. So far, so good. Went from 100mg to 50mg three weeks ago, and was just off it completely for 5 straight days, so far not even a pimple).

Anyway, I've been growing my hair out for months and it just got long enough to put up in a little ponytail. When I pulled it back and checked out the back of my head in the mirror I noticed that my hairline at the nape of my neck has long hair growing from it, just down the sides of my neck, not in the middle. You know those little "sideburns" most people have that start at the hair line just below the ears on either side that grow a little further down than the rest of the hair? The hairs actually are growing out of the neck, pretty much, not the head. Well, mine are now growing out of my neck about a half inch lower on one side and almost an inch lower on the other. It looks so weird if I put my hair back.

I'm probably going to have to have it lasered off when I can get enough money to do so. My hairdresser confirmed it is definitely new growth that was never there before and she trimmed it, but it still looks bad. I want to cut all my hair off and get a really cute, short cut, but I can't go lower than like chin length now because of this.
I know spiro is supposed to help women with thinning hair, but has anyone ever experienced new hair growth where they don't actually want it?

Um, I'm just throwing this out there, but I know a lot of people that have hair growing a bit further down on the napes of their necks. Heck, I'm one of them. That's just how hair grows for some people. It's not a big deal.

If you've had short hair for a while now, and are growing it out, there's a good chance that that hair's always just been trimmed up whenever you got your hair cut. For me, I know that the "baby hair" on the back of my neck always seems to grow faster than the rest of my hair when I'm growing it out. It usually doesn't grow as long as the rest of my hair, though, so when I put my hair up, I get these soft little curls down there.

If they bother you that much, just ask your stylist to clean them up when you get your next hair cut. They're easily taken care of--just a quick zip, zip with the buzzer, and they're gone. I used to have it done all the time when I was rocking a short 'do.

See? It's normal to have some hair there. ; )

Very normal to have hair there. When I had a short short hairstyle, I had those bits shaved to maintain a clean line at the back of the head. biggrin.gif

Hey there,
Thanks for the replies, and the pics! Now, that second picture is how my hair used to look in the back. I had super short hair for like 9 years and my stylist used to use the trimmer back there and clean it up.

Now take the second picture and imagine the trimmed up hair in the back growing even an inch lower than it is in that picture. That's what I have now. I probably can't describe it accurately enough, but it's grown way further down, so if I were to clean it up I'd have stubble almost to my mid neck but only in straight lines extending down on either side of the neck (and I have a long neck). It's definitely grown further down in the last six to nine months. It's the least of my troubles, but it's definitely new, so I was just wondering if anyone else had ever experienced it.

Thanks again for the responses!

I went cold turkey off spiro and BCP. Had to get back on BCP to help control migraines (it works for me.) My face if broken out the worst it's been in years, I think, due to going off the spiro. The reason I went off spiro is because my hair thinned and fell out over the years since I've been on it-- started at 50mg and worked up to 150mg daily. I did not experience hair growth on spiro but rather hair loss at the nape of the neck and patchy hairloss on other parts of my head. Funny thing is I got on spiro to help with hairloss I was having for a few years. Spiro made my hairloss worse. It did help clear up acne I couldn't control for years. Even tried acutane. I've decided to try only 50 mg a day of spiro to still help with the acne. I'm hoping on this low of dose my hair will not thin and fall out as much. Any suggestions. I'm 50 yrs old. Don't want to be bald or have acne. Is that asking too much???
