so, i just got off 3 months of accutane, cus it made my mild acne way way way worse.

so i'm gonna wait a few weeks, and go back to antibiotics. i took minocycline for a long time, kept it undercontrol, but wanted to stop w/antibiotics and went to accutane.

my question is, does doxy work better than mino? or is it the same type of thing? i figured i should try a diff antibiotic......

I would say go for Doxycycline, if possible. Why? First, because Minocycline can cause severe side effects if you are unlucky. Second, Doxycycline not only contains anti bacteria properties but anti inflammatory as well.

The only thing that you need to take note is, avoid intense sunlight while you are on Minocycline or Doxycycline, especially Doxycycline, as it may cause photodermatitis when over exposure to the sunlight for a prolong period of time.

The last but not least, if you ever encounter antibiotic resistance after a while, then stop taking it for 9 to 12 months and then you can retake it again after that period of time and it will work wonders once again.

I am currently taking minocycline 100mg twice a day. My derm switched me from Doryx (slow-release Doxycycline) which I really liked because I had no side effects, but after 6 months developed resistance to.

Doryx is the only antibiotic that I've ever taken for acne that had no side effects. It is metabolized in the small intestine instead of the stomach, so nausea and stomach irritation is non-existent. It does cost more, but for me, it was worth it.

Mino and Doxy worked the same for me. Both took about three weeks to work (mino worked a little quicker). The key is to not stay on these antibiotics for a long time. I stayed on mino for eight months and became resistant to it. I tried doxy after for two months and went off of it after my face cleared up.

When you came of Doxy did acne come back? Ive never been on anitbotics for acne till now at 33. I would get the occasional cyst stuff. Dr put me on Doxy. Im not sure if what he saw when he put me on it was a spider bite or cyst acne on my neck.

for me personally, I took erythromycin in high school and it worked great! Now at 26, back with the acne again and doc put me on doxy. I have no results yet but just started it. My advice is try the erythromycin next.

Personally, having been on Minocycline for over 9 months now I would say Minocycline. Why? because it's very good for all types of acne and it's what my doctor recommended. I can't say what the other one is like as I dont know.

If you ask around; someone should be able to help you. smile.gif

Good luck

If minocycline didnt work for my acne will doxycycline work? I used minocycline almost a year ago and it did nothing for my acne, but i did seem to get a few side effects. I was perscribed doxycycline adn i am worried about starting it since i am on yaz and that has helped a lot but im still breakingout. I just dont want to go on the doxy and have it make my yaz less effective at treating my acne. What do i do? Plus antibiotics are so bad for you. But doxycycline is my last resort in the antibiotic department. I am allergic to all the rest. Bactrim DS was working in 3 weeks but it gave me a horrible rash all over my body and my lips started to swell. It sucked cause i was starting to get so happy that my face was clearing. It stayed mosty clear for about 3 months after that too adn then went crazy!!! im so confused. i was also perscribed azelex cream 20% and i am worried about that too. It feels so greasy on my face and i am already oily on my face. I worry it will break me out more. and no one seems to know how exactly it works. Any advise??????

well sarahjn, i posted this same exact question literally one post before this topic lol. i was in the same situation, except without the birth control and allergy stuff. and i can tell you that my doxy IS working even though the mino i was on a few years ago did nothing. i was pretty pleased. it started working almost from pill one. i've had a couple new small pimples since i started sat. but i'm assuming it could have something to do with "initial breakout." but all in all, it's working well. now if these post acne marks would just go away! i'm not a woman so i have no idea what being on an anti-biotic would to your skin if you're also using bc. hope that helps! good luck!

There is no rote, textbook definition of "better" or "worse" drugs, it all depends on the individual patient. Some people will respond better to one medication or another. A doctor is the person to consult to decide which is best for you.

I was on minocycline for 4 years starting when I was 15. It worked great at clearing up my face and back. My skin was super clear for my senior year of high school, but then it got worse when i started college. I didn't change anything in my regimen so im guessing i developed a resistance to it. After four years of minocycline, I started to have some stomach issues. apparently the minocycline was causing some inflamation and irritation which would give me sporadic severe stomach pain. My derm then switched me to doxycline and i think it started to work. But i was only on it for 5 weeks so i dont think i ever got to see the full effect. My gastroenterologist told me that any anti-biotics that end in -cycline have the potential to cause stomach problems so my derm put me on Erythromycin. ive been on it for 6 weeks now and i cant really tell if its working.

Doxycycline does seem to work even if minocycline does't help or you develop resistance to it. Good Luck!
