I've been taking BCP for seven years for my skin. I finished accutane last year, and my skin is doing alright. I'm thinking about stopping my birth control. For those that have been in the same situation, what side effects did occur after you stopped taking BCP? Did you have more breakouts, etc? I'm just worried that I've spent such a long time trying to clear my skin that as soon as I stop taking the pill, my skin will get worse.

stopping bcp really made me break out because i'm pretty sure my acne is hormone related. i took yasmin for two years and my skin was great, i would get like one or two pimples a month but since i stopped taking it last May (because my husband and i are trying to get pregnant) my skin has gotten terrible. everyone is different though so if you really want to get off the bcp then i would try it and then if it seems that you are breaking out just start taking it again. when i stopped taking bcp in May, i didn't notice acne coming in until mid-june. it started off slow and gradually kept getting worse

I stopped bcps (ortho tri cyclen at first, then trisprintec when it became available per my insurance co) after 10+ years and I did not break out terribly, just a few pimples here and there around my period. But it was more than 5 years after completing my second round of accutane. I think if I had stopped them within a year or so after finishing accutane I would have had at least a small breakout at first. Hard to say though, because everyone responds so differently. I had to do accutane twice within a 3 year period (at age 23 and again at age 25) and since then I have never had cystic acne again. I'm 34 now and I still get pimples around the chin and jawline when I'm PMSing. The only thing that really clears my skin up very well is trisprintec, but I will never get on it again because of side effects. Even spiro (alone or with bcps) has not worked for me as well as the bcp.
