I just thought I'd share some info with those who are concerned about taking spironolactone and watching their potassium levels.
I am currently taking 100 mg spiro and yaz daily (and have been for almost 3 months). Before that, I was taking 50 mg spiro daily for about 4 months. My doctor never mentioned ANYTHING about potassium or having my levels checked. I've heard/seen that several of you have doctors that require blood tests before and during taking spiro.
I eat a diet pretty high in veggies, I love tomatoes (I eat them almost every day), and I eat guacamole whenever the opportunity arises
And guess what.
Normal. All normal. Textbook perfect.
My point: if you've had a pretty healthy life thus far, your kidneys are probably doing their job and making sure that your body has the right balance of electrolytes. If your M.D. is monitoring your potassium levels, even better. If not, you are probably okay, but you might sleep better at night knowing for sure you have decent labs, so I suggest just finding out yourself (google lab clinics to see if there are any in your area).
P.S. signs of hyperkalemia (too much potassium) could be muscle weakness/cramps. And if you stop peeing, your body is not getting rid of the excess (if there is any). So, keep hydrated.
As for the acne, I am finally starting to see improvement, so hang in there, it may take a while.
