Hi all,

I just had 17 punch grafts done last week to correct ice pick scars. My doctor carved out the deep scars and replaced it with skin taken from behind my ears. The bandages came off today and low and behold I have dark red bumps that replaced the old scars. My doctor says they should flatten out, but I am currently freaking out. Some of the grafts are flat, but definitely dark in color. I look like I've been afflicted with the chicken pox with these dark red dots all over my face!

Has anyone done punch grafts before? How was your healing experience--how long did it take? Did you have a lot of discoloration?

I'm Asian and my doctor did not want to risk me with laser resurfacing (hyperpigmentation, increased redness), so I opted for the "lower risk" punch graft. I plan to do a microdermabrasion in about 6-8 weeks.

Please share your punch graft experiences...thanks so much!

Hey daisy

I haven't had punch grafts, but punch excisions. I am pale/medium Asian skinned (Thai colouring)

The discolouration lasts a long time - At least 6 months. I still have some of it left. I think microdermabrasion will help to smooth the grafts and also with the redness ... but you may want to do a search on this board for lactic acid peels - they can help with regular use (and pretty good for Asian skins) - also, I've been reading about 'Black Opal essential fade' which seems to be effective too.

Hi Daisy,
I had punch grafting done, but I am very pale and did not have any trouble with hyperpigmentation. You are still very early in the healing stage, so I would not worry too much. Take Maya's advice regarding the lactic peels later on and I think you will see good improvement. Just take your time and let your body heal first. Good Luck! biggrin.gif

Thanks for your reply, ladies. I will keep you informed on my status. I will also look into the lactic peel you mentioned, Maya. The aesthetician at my doctor's office suggested doing alternate treatments between microdermabrasion and chemical peels after about 6 weeks (at least 2 week interval between treatments).

It just seems like forever until then...

If they are still red than it's still healing at this point. Sun screen with a hat. biggrin.gif/
