MY DAUGHTER BEGAN TAKING ACCUTANE IN JAN FOR SEVERE NODULAR ACNE. I WAS AGAINST IT BUT HER FATHER (MY EX) SIGNED HER UP. SHE HAD NO PREVIOUS GLUCOSE PROBLEMS BUT AFTER HER 1ST MONTH HER TRIGLICERIDES SPIKED AND THEN SHE SHOWED SIGNS OF HIGH SUGAR. SHE WAS TESTED FOR SUGAR ON MONDAY AND SHE WAS OVER 600!! THEY SENT HER TO THE ER AND THEY DIAGNOSED HER WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES. THE AREA OF HER PANCREAS THAT PRODUCES INSULIN IS DESTROYED.
YES, AFTER 6 WEEKS ON ACCUTANE SHE HAD NO ACTIVE BREAKOUTS, HAD SEVERE SCARRING, BUT NOW MUST BE ON INSULIN FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE!!
THIS DRUG MUST BE BANNED! IT IS INSANE! WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD RISK THEIR HEALTH AND THEIR LIFE? PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU MAKE A DECISION THAT MAY AFFECT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE OR YOUR LIFE ITSELF.

wow that is incredibly unfortunate and i am very sorry that happened to your daughter.
however, every person perceives the drug differently because it has a different effect onevery person, and therefore i do not think that they should ban it.
every drug has some type of extremely bad side effects/ outcomes. but the number that these awful side effects happen on is very minimal. even retalin, which helps children concentrate can be addictive and even kill, but should they ban it? no.
maybe your daughter ate too much food that contained sugar, and that mixed with accutane created this diagnoses, i have no idea.

I HEAR YOU BUT EATING TOO MUCH SUGAR DOES NOT CAUSE TYPE 1 DIABETES, IT IS THE DESTRUCTION OF THE PANCREAS' INSULIN MAKING CENTER THAT DOES. ALSO THE DR DID NOT TEST FOR SUGAR LEVELS BEFORE SHE WAS GIVEN THE DRUG. I AM IMPLORING ANYONE CONSIDERING THIS DRUG TO MAKE SURE THEIR SUGAR LEVELS ARE TESTED SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO THROUGH WHAT MY DAUGHTER IS AND WILL FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE. IT IS A LISTED SIDE EFFECT. (HAVING SUGAR LEVEL PROBLEMS). SINCE THIS DRUG WAS INTRODUCED 20 YEARS ADO THE FDA HAS REQUIRED THEM TO KEEP RELABELING THE SIDE EFFECTS AS MORE AND MORE ARE ATTRIBUTED TO ACCUTANE. IT IS ONE OF ONLY 3 DRUGS THAT REQUIRES THE SPECIAL MED SHEET AND THAT ALL USERS NEED TO BE REGISTERED WITH THE FDA. IF THAT DOES NOT SCARE PEOPLE AWAY THEN GOOD LUCK TO THEM.

I'm so sorry to hear that. It is so true that your daughter should have blood test done before using accutane. I've done some researches. It seems that accutane shouldn't cause type I diabete (http://www.nlm.nih.g...icle/000305.htm ) "Type 1 diabetes is often called juvenile or insulin-dependent diabetes." "The exact cause is unknown. Genetics, viruses, and auto-immune problems may play a role." "Patients with type 1 diabetes usually develop symptoms over a short period of time, and the condition is often diagnosed in an emergency setting." Logically speaking, there is no strong correlation between accutane and Type I diabete.

my heart is with you here...... Maybe the stress of the accutane threw the immune system out of whack..... Sorry to hear of the frustration and pain.

Try to take some comfort in that you didn't make a horrible mistake. You were doing the best you could in a tough situation to begin with.... Ongoing heavy acne can be as debilitating as any disease...

it sounds like your the one who should have done the research ? and nobody forced your daughter to take accutane. this is why they give you a booklet of information about it so your aware of the risks of the drug.

anyways this story sounds like bs to me. u blame 1 month of accutane alone for destroying your daughters pancreas. and coming on here with the name "mom of an accutane wreck" and ranting about it. probably some guy who is mad accutane gave him flushing so he makes up stories to scare people away from it

I CANNOT PROVE WHO I AM, BUT WHY WOULD ANYONE WASTE THEIR TIME MAKING UP STORIES? LIFE IS WAY TOO SHORT. OF COURSE THERE ARE JERKS WHO PROBABLY HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO. YES I SHOULD HAVE DONE RESEARCH BUT MY EX INSISTED THAT SHE BE PUT ON THIS DRUG, SHORT OF HIRING A LAWYER WHICH I COULD NOT AFFORD, I COULD NOT STOP HIM. AFTER SHE WAS ON IT I DID DO RESEARCH SO I COULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR DEPRESSION AND SUICIDAL TENDENCIES THAT ARE DOCUMENTED BY ROCHE THEMSELVES. I READ ABOUT EVERY SIDE EFFECT INCLUDING "IT CAN AFFECT SUGAR LEVELS" IN ROCHES OWN LITERATURE. I ALSO VISITED THE FDA SITE AND WAS ASTOUNDED BY HOW MANY TIMES THEY HAVE REQUIRED ROCHE TO RELABEL AS A NEW DANGEROUS SIDE AFFECT WAS PROVEN TO BE LINKED TO ACCUTANE. GO TO THEIR SITE AND YOU WILL SEE THEM TOO. (FDA). MAYBE YOU ARE AN EMPLOYEE OF ROCHE PHARMACUETICALS SENT TO SPY ON THESE FORUMS TO MAKE SURE NOONE IS BASHING THEM, I AM JUST TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO TAKE ACCUTANE DO THEIR RESEARCH FIRST AND GET EVERY BLOOD TEST THEY CAN INCLUDING GLUCOSE SINCE ACCUTANE AFFECTS GLUCOSE LEVELS.

Accutane save and ruin alot of peoples so I'm not surprise that some people accuse the thread starter. Personally I do not agree that accutane should be ban but rather the cumulative dose should be ban though. Persistent mild acnes should only be prescribe 10mg for 4 months while severe acnes should be prescribe 20mg for 6 months.

Sorry to hear about the experience. But, you are really just pointing a finger at accutane. You have not given us a background on your daughter (All you stated was "she had no glucose problems") nor a background on your family. Diabetes is strongly connected to genetics so that could be the reason for this. Also most people that are diagnosed with diabetes just randomly get it one day without getting any signs of ever having it. So who is to say that this day would not have come to your daughter if she weren't taking accutane?

TYPE 1 DIABETES IS NOT GENETIC IT IS AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE. TYPE 2 DIABETES IS GENETIC. THEY ARE VERY SEPARATE DISEASES. I WILL STOP POSTING BECAUSE EVERYONE SEEMS TO WANT TO IGNORE ALL OF THE ACCUTANE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE FDA WARNINGS. GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

Well, i have read and follow what you are saying, but at the end of the day... people are still going to take it?

I'm going on tuesday to see my derm, and want to be on 20mg for my course, culmulative or not, and see how things go... but it has cleared my skin up, people compliment me on it... which is something i thought would never happen having 15/20+ spots A DAY evetry day...

which is life hindering in itself, mental can be just as bad as physical.

Type I diabetes can be genetic but also caused by other factors...

Seeing that she's taking accutane for acne, she must be at least 12+, genetic diabetes usually show up earlier than that...

OMG! Thats scary! That is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too high of a blood sugar! I work in a nursing home and even before insulin is given to the residents, their blood sugar isnt anywhere above 300. Im sorry your daughter and your family is suffering from this stupid Accutane. I hate accutane too! It gave me suicidal ideations.

I think the problem here is anyone who had success with Accutane gets so defensive when someone says they had a horrible reaction to it. The same also goes true though for people who have had the horrible side effects. I defend myself because of what the drug did to me and it appears thats what mom is a car wreck is doing too and understandably so

Thats not true! Most people who get diabetes get it when they are older, not when they are in their teens

it might not have been the accutane. just to tell you, you can get type 1 diabetes from ages birth-22 years. i would know...i too am diabetic (got it at 2..now im 16). so just deal with it..thats all u can do. sorry if i sound kinda bitchy...it just angers me when people say stuff can cause diabetes before they even look at the causes...which at the time are: unknown.

I have never in my three years of working in a nursing home and 24 years of life having a mother who is an RN and my father who is a paramedic of a sixteen year old just randomly having a blood sugar of 600! If that is a side affect of accutane, then maybe the accutane did cause it. This mother is obviously distraught. I do not think now is the time to say that accutane might not have caused it.

Hit your caps lock key douche.

There are risks involved in taking accutane, just like there are risks involved in crossing the street. My experience with accutane has been totally positive.

Unfortunately, we're all in the same boat here. Everyone is gambling, risking our health for the promise of clear skin. We always imagine that it will be somebody distant, somebody far away that ends up with horrible side-effects that this drug is known to cause, while we enjoy for the first time in years clear skin. But in the end, it's just a dice roll. I'm sorry for your daughter.
