I take anywhere from 250mg Glutathione 3X a day to 500mg. Glutathione 3X a day when I take it orally - I break open the pills and spill them into water. i have heard that this is the best way for the body to assimulate supplements.

Great brands I have used: Montiff, Solgar, Theranaturals, Pure Encapsulations. It's cheaper if you start out buying pills - then graduate to powder when you want to be able to control the amounts.

I originally started taking Glutathione in a nebulizer for respiratory distress. And, low and behold, my skin cleared up!!

BE CAREFUL!! Glutathione is one of the most powerful detoxifiers. It is the most potent detoxifier for the LIVER - which is why, I believe, my skin is clear as long as I take it.

If you have Mercury in your system, you could have bad detox reactions to Glutathione and should (everyone should anyway) go to a holistic Dr. who can tell you how to get rid of the mercury in your body. It can cause pretty serious problems anyway.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. I wish you all luck in your quest for clear skin - I know how awful acne is!

Peace out,

Trevor

I thought glutathione didn't get utilized almost at all when taken orally? Or am I getting it confused with another amino acid?

You are correct. Glutathione is not well absorbed across the GI tract. "In a study of acute oral administration of a very large dose (3 grams) of oral glutathione, it was found that it is not possible to increase circulating glutathione in a clinically relevant way" (Wikipedia).

The Good News:
The precursor to glutathione is cysteine. Therfore, ingestion of cysteine can increase levels of glutathione in the body. It is best to obtain cysteine in your diet. High protein foods are excellent sources of cysteine: red peppers, garlic, onions, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, oats, granola, wheat germ, eggs, milk, whey protein, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, pork, chicken, turkey, and luncheon meat.

I'm taking it too. Not noticing any difference. Oh well. Probably because I've taken it for less than a month.

You have to take it with at least double the dosage Vitamin C for proper absorption.

Just for the record, glutathione isn't an amino acid! wink.gif

It's a tripeptide (a protein, in other words) consisting of three separate amino acids.

I researched glutathione a little bit out of curiosity, and found a study that people with acne had lower glutathione levels than those without. But, low glutathione is found to be an indicator of ill health in almost any regard, so finding that those with acne have low glutathione levels doesn't mean that it's a causative factor, it just implies that those with acne are generally less healthy than those without. This finding supports my theory that acne is a symptom of a deeper problem that needs to be fixed, but it does not give us a solution to that problem, or even a clue as to what that problem might be. Low glutathione levels are found in the elderly, in those with AIDS, cancer, and poisoning. Elderly people with higher glutathione levels were found to be much more likely to live past 100.

One study says that oral glutathione doesn't absorb well at all, another study found that up to 80% of glutathione is absorbed. I'm more prone to believe the second because the first study was extremely limited. It tested a single 3 gram dose of oral glutathione administered to AIDS patients - known for having dysfunctional digestive systems, the biggest problem being malnutrition because of poor absorption of nutrients. So is it any surprise the glutathione wasn't absorbed? At 270 minutes after the administration of the single dose to these AIDS patients, blood levels were checked and recorded, and that was the end of the study. Their conclusion was not that glutathione is not generally absorbable as many believe, but that glutathione is a poor oral supplement for AIDS patients. The second study was done on rats however, so it's hard to say how applicable that is to humans, but considering rats are a staple of studies for their similarity to humans biochemically speaking, I have to assume there would be a similarity in response. That study found an 80% absorption rate. Glutathione is also found in many foods such as fruits, vegetables and meats, but is destroyed by heat, so I would have to assume then that a diet high in processed foods would be deficient in glutathione, and may be one reason why such a diet is so unhealthy.

Overall, it seems that glutathione is something we would want to aim to keep high for general health purposes, but there is no research to suggest that there's anything attributable to glutathione that would help treat acne specifically. That's doesn't mean that it couldn't, there's just no information out there that would suggest that it would.

hey - it's been a while b/c i don't come back to this board since my skin is clear now but wanted to give an update.... i don't get notification on the board that someone replies to my messages, but i wanted to just say that not only did the glutathione clear up my skin, but so did L- glutamic acid. I took 500 mg 2-3 X a day in litterally 2 days it was clear (I had gone off glutathione & started to break out & tried it. It has something to do with making glutathine so i think this could be why). Anyway, I wanted to be sure to post about this. I will try to get back to repies on the board. Thanks.

not to be snide, but I think its a joke that people say "DIM clears you in a week!" Or that I was "literally clear in two days." Is that not worse than a proactiv commercial? Unless your acne that is so mild that you really don't need to be on this board....you are simply lying and giving people false hope. Acne doesn't clear in two days, period.

ACTUALLY it did clear me in 2 days, so don't go around calling me a liar and taking AWAY people's hope! I came on this board to tell people information that saved my skin. That's all. Take it or leave it - and until you try something for yourself, don't knock it!

Trevorchitown just ignore that comment. There are different types of acne, and some types can be drastically reduced in just a matter of days, I have seen it. Please continue to post any progress or relevant information. Thank you.

Does anyone know if just supplementing Glutamine would make glutathione, and would it be enough?

Thanks very much - I had bad acne and had been on Accutane & antibiotics most of my life so I know how it feels and came on here because of that. I will continue to answer questons re: glutathione and glutamic acid and won't let one ignorant, judgemental person who hasn't even tried the supplements dissuade me from doing what I came here to do.

I don't think so because Glutathione is formed from Cysteine, Glutamic acid, and Glycine. I have been on N-acetyl cysteine for my breathing issues a long time ago and that helped my breathing but nothing for my skin. However, everyone is different - and who knows, maybe that will help someone. Glutathione is touted by some as not being effective taken alone, but that is not true because it is used by people for lung problems. People often use the nebulized form and great results have been reported for people with lung/breathing issues. I have experienced them first hand. You can google about this if you are curious. I told my Dr. that my skin cleared up from Glutathione, and he said he's heard of that before. I didn't get anymore details from him other that that on the issue. GLUTAMIC ACID also cleared up my skin - and yes, it cleared it up in 2 days. It was dramatic & I figured I would come on this board and try to help other people.

Whenever you look up glutathione you can find a little bit about acne, but mostly about skin whitening. I guess darker people use it to lighten their skin or remove spots and stuff, have you noticed anything of this nature?

Also, what type of acne do you have? Cysts/Whiteheads/Blackheads

Do you take any other supplements or have a special diet?

Thank you.

I noticed that also when I googled glutathione and acne. I noticed a lot of posts about skin whitening but I've never experienced anything like that. I have very light, fair skin and have never noticed it getting any lighter.

My main acne problem was Cysts below the skin - I also had regular acne and whiteheads. I had the kind of cysts (face, back, and chest) that would have to be injected at the Dermatologists office - which is why I wound up going on Accutane. But whenever I went off the Accutane, I would break out again. It was a horrible vicious cycle.

I am on a special diet because of my breathing. I did notice that I when I cut dairy out of my diet my skin got a drop better, but nothing major. I do try to eat healthy and am allergic to chocolate and various foods, so I'm sure that helps, but again - staying away from chocolate and dairy helped not break me out even MORE, but it didn't get rid of the acne I already had and kept getting. I have heard that going off dairy & chocolate does help with acne, but I had a pretty serious case.

I've never heard anything about estrogen and glutathione... I just tried googling and i couldn't tell that anything was really written about the supplement glutathione and estrogen - it seems they are talking about glutathione in the body. I'm just writing about my experiences here - I am not a doctor but maybe if you are worried about taking it, you should run it by a holistic Dr. (not conventional - I have found they know little to nothing about supplelments!) or a nutritionist or even someone who works at a health food store. The brands I use are mentioned above. Try looking into the Glutamic Acid as well.

It's N-acetyl-Cystiene that you supplement with vitamin C - not glutathione. You can google it.
