Hi there, Im just wondering what the actual affect of sunlight is on people taking antibiotics, specifically minocycline. I was on a course of accutane a few years ago and i went on holiday to a hot country and after coming back i experienced for about a year a really bad case of facial flushing whereby even the slightest feeling of uneasyness would make me go bright red. And when i exercised i would also go very very red for about an hour. Although it may have been a coincidence that it happened after i came back from holiday, i attributed it to accutane based on the theory that skin is thinner while on accutane, and the sun may have damaged my blood capilliaries in my face. Im not a scientist though so this may be wrong!

The problem has since 99% disappeared but i want to go on holiday again. Im on minocycline and im wondering whether the "photosensitivity" side effect just means you burn more easily, or whether something similar to the accutane saga will happen.

Thanks..

Photosensitivty means just that your skin is more likely to burn and thus a greater risk for skin cancer. You should not experience flushing from photosensitivity, but it is possible. I would say your chances of flushing while on an antibiotic are much less then when on accutane, although I have never taken accutane but am currently on eyrthroymicn.

I had a same experience last year when i was taking Isotretinoina (in portuguese), a substance that i think is used on Acuttane. So, i talked to my Derm and i said to him that i was going for 15 days to Rio de Janeiro. He said to not taking the pills because of the side effects of the antibiotic i was taking(photosensitivity).

So even stopping these 15 days from taking the pills, my skin burned as hell sometimes.

On the last days my skin was very clear, shining and beautifull...i was in heaven LOL
Well, suddenly my face break out (with inflammed zits, white heads)!
i didnt have the time to arrive home clear...No doubt it was the photosensitivity from the pills. So...be very careful with the sun if u are taking antibiotics with this side effects! My personal experience says that...I dont know for how long does this kind of antibiotics stays on the organism...I started to hate antibiotcs since then, cause Sun is everywhere...i live in a city with a beach...its sunny many times of the year and i dont like to now that SUN is making me worse.

Good luck
