Normally a dumb derm starts one on 0.1 and then to 0.3 as tolerence builds.
The only difference is % of concentration of the retinoid.

If we are talking "better" as far as controlling acne goes, in general a retinoid will work better than BP. Retinoids normalize your skin cells and shedding such that acne is prevented at the microcomedone level. Basically, retinoids keep your skin from creating the sticky cells that clog your pores in the first place. BP also can help keep pores from clogging, as it does have a mild peeling effect, but it's chief job is to control bacteria. It will do nothing to the stickiness of your cells, and to your skin shedding process. But it will help keep clogged pores from becoming inflammed, and it will clear some of your clogged pores. I think it should help some eventually. But I'm not positive on that. Can't quite remember what I read about retinoids and oiliness.

it smoothes out your skin and theres no initial breakout. Hardly any redness aswell
