I was prescribed minocyline for my acne and my dr gave me enough refills for 6 months. I would like to hear from people who are currently taking minocycline or who've taken it in the past. I would like to hear what you're experiences with mino was like or like now. thank you.

iive been on mino for just under 4 weeks. i have used the regimen for the past 3 years and starting in may i stopped and just used salicylic acid wash with a moisturizer and found great success. my acne is moderate, very persistant, and i do have some body acne. as soon as october and november came around i broke out a lot worse than i have in the past few years and went to a derm who prescribed me with minocycline. i took 200mg for the first week and 100mg since as my derm said a study has shown that over 1mg per kg of patient weight does not prove to be any more effective, but tthe the initial week of 200mg would get my body used to the medication and show if i would have severe side effects. my first few days i did experience dizziness within the half hour of taking a pill and probably the third day i had a pretty bad headache (dont know if that was mino but hadnt had many headaches before then).
anyway, its safe to say that the side effects have been very minimal, but on to the itmportant stuff; the results! well i continued to break out badly but my skin does seem to be healing faster. my body acne has shown the greatest improvement with hardly any inflamation on my back. i cant really say as of yet how good the results are on my face because the healing can just be natural after a bad breakout, but do prepare for it to get worse before it gets better. ive read many reviews and notes on minocycline that it can take anywhere from 6-12 weeks to see results, so i can write back after my 6 week point and give a better judgment on mino then. im really hoping it works because i only see accutane as the next best alternative. good luck with your treatment, and who knows you might see dramatic improvement iwthin the first two weeks (ive read plenty reviews that have said that). each person may react differently.
btw, what did your doc say about anticipating results? when did he/she say you can really judge the mino?

I took mini 6 years ago. All the antibiotics I was prescribed worked so great. But the thing I remembered about minocy was it made me dizzy alot and stomach aches so much I had to go to the derma and he gave me tetrycyline. I took antibiotics for a year and a half that's when my skin was the clearest.

I was on and off it for about 8 years.
My skin seemed to clear within a few weeks but after 6 months or so my bad skin came back.
Some people believe that your skin just gets immune to the antibiotics.
Problem with antibiotics is that you tend to have a break out when you try and come off them too so I ended up staying on them for fear of a mass breakout.
Not good.

By the end of jan I will have been on mino for three months and my prescription will be finished. Its worked well I'm pretty much clear of spots now and its the only thing thats killed under the skin lesions. Have no idea what to do about coming off it though I'm positive after reading the testimonials of people on here that I will be back to square one at least when I come off, if not have worse acne than when I started.

you need to taper off the medicine...do not stop cold turkey. if you take it twice a day go down to one a day, if you take one a day go to every other day.

I've had a precription for minocycline for a year. It has worked ok for me but I only take it as needed....meaning when I have a minor flair-up usually on my neck.
I will say I switch up the precription every year or so to doxycycline because I do think your body gets use to one drug if you use it to much.
Oh, when I didn't follow the directions and took it on an empty stomach or with vitamins.
it did mess with me so I do take it with food.
Also, even though these drugs work now before I took accutane no antibiotic the derm put me on worked to stop my acne.

how is doxycyline different then minocycline? are they much different? my dr told me to take mino on an empty stomach and to avoid vitamins for 2-3 hours. is it the same with doxy?

Mino worked wonders for me but it cannot be used for a long period of time so i had to stop using it at 5 months. Worked great for me but once i went off it, pimples came back.

I don't think there is really much difference both are part of the tetracycline antibiotics
group. Nowdays I only take these drugs as needed for a couple of weeks at a time when
I feel bumps coming on until they are gone. I switch things up because my body
becomes immune to the affects of one or the other if I take one for to long....as far
as how I take it....I treat it the same way I treat minocycline.
Basically, this is just part of my maintenance. I really don't have an acne problem any
more because accutane took care of that. But, after a few years off accutane my really
oily skin did return and with it an occasional minor flair-ups. So, really in fear of major
acne returning today I continue to use products to keep my skin dry and take the meds
as needed.
