If your not allergic to it, you shouldn't have a problem. Just watch for symptoms, may take up to 2 weeks to know if you are allergic or not. My dd is taking it now - 2x a day- but be forewared, because it's one of the "strongest" antiboitcs out there, most derms limit it's use to mabye 6 months max. My daughter started taking it a couple of months ago for a bad initial breakout she had on Sprio and yes it worked after about 3 weeks. The derm told us she can continue on the 2x per day for another month (just to make sure the Sprio has kicked in) and then she will be dosing down to 1x per day for another month or two and then will be taken off of it. It's not designed for long term use like Mino or Doxy..

Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear it does work. I was on Doxy for about 7 months... and it worked wonders for me... then it stopped working. So I've been put on Mino... and though i think it does help... my face doesn't stay clear. I still get break outs a lot. I heard lots of good stuff about bactrim... so i really was hoping maybe my derm. will put me on it. I haven't had any allergic reactions to anything in the past... so i'm hoping i wont be allergic to bactrim.
I've heard a lot of different people say they have stayed on bactrim for years though... and it still works wonders for them....????? Why wont your derm let your daughter stay on it for a long period of time... if it is working well for her... and she didn't have any allergic reaction?
And is it possible if you are on it for a long time that you may become immune to it?
I hope i could just stay on bactrim... and if it works, then i could just stay on it till one day my acne goes away... but maybe thats just wishful thinking.
Do you have to get blood work done while you are on it???
Is it expensive?
Sorry for all the questions...
Thanks so much

Well like any other antiboitic it's going to stop working eventually
I had another friend whose son was on Bactrim and the derm told her the same thing mine did - that it's strong so he could only be on it for 6 months. I think the rational behind that is to introduce other meds to help with the acne while taking the Bactrim that hopefully will work after you stop taking the Bactrim (like my daughter on the Sprio). I've also read reviews here where people have been on it long term - I guess it's really a question between you and your derm and what he/she thinks. I would certainly ask them about it, especially if the Mino doesn't seem to be helping. Bactrim does seem to work quickly and quite effectively if your not allergic. My daughter had no problems at all (thank goodness) taking it and like I said before, seemed to really help after about 3 weeks.
Talk to your derm for sure, see what they suggest. Don't know if you have tried topicals, those seem to work longer term for most people. And of course there is always BCP and Sprio as options as well. although I totally understand some women's resistance to taking BCP. I know how frustrating it can be - my daughter broke out so bad over the summer - I feel like we went through so much to find something that actually worked for her. It really was a trial and error type of thing. Best of luck to you!

Full name is Spironolactone - in simple terms, it's a drug that block androgens which cause acne - it's off label for acne but it's been around for years. You can read about it either in the treatment reviews under Perscriptions - Oral (should be first one listed if I remember correctly) on another sub-forum here in Perscription Acne Meds under "hormornal" and ask questions there if you have any. Has a very high success rate for most women, although it does seem to take 3 or 4 months to work. But you can take it long term and apparently it never stops working. You can also google "Sprio Acne Women" for more info. Good luck!

Just so you know that's a little misleading. Blood work is involved after you've been on it for 6 months. It can weaken the bone marrow and blood work is used to determine if this is occurring. If it is not a problem then you can stay on it if needed for another 6 months. Your Derm might not want to do the blood work if he's just stopping at 6 months not offering to go longer as an option.

It is unwise to the extreme to use any antibiotic that has use in other infections for treatment of acne. Minocycline is almost never used for anything but acne. Doxycline is used in a few types of illnesses but mainly acne. The problem is resistance of bacteria. YOU don't become immune, your bacteria does. Then of course you spread those immune bacteria around and then we have skyrocketing numbers of methicillin resistant staph aureas, clostridium difficile, etc.
The above is the main reason derms do not like to use Bactrim long term.
