I'm nearing the end of my 2nd course of lymecycline antibiotics and I've been given 2 options by my GP. Trimethoprim (an antibiotic which I think is similar to Bactrim??) which is unlicensed for acne in the UK but is often prescribed anyway, and Dianette.

I'm aware antibiotics are a 'short-term fix' and no matter how well Trimethoprim may work, I'm going to have to come off it some day and my acne will no doubt return...
But numerous reviews of Dianette suggest that this is also a short term fix, with acne returning (sometimes worse) after stopping (I would have to stop Dianette after 2 years max as my GP says that she's not supposed to keep patients on this for lengthy periods of time).

It seems like a catch 22 but I'll have to try one of these to have any chance of being referred to a dermatologist in the future.

Any suggestions/ recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

hard question to answer. I've just started lymecyclin after 3 or so years of dianette. I would recommend dianette, cos it works AMAZINGLY, but yeah, it is a short term solution, cos my acne came back just as bad about 4 months after I came off it. On the other hand, if its a catch 22 situation, u may as well go for the dianette which does work, then reconsider in 2 or 3 years time. I dont think acne really gets worse after dianette, and it works very well. I'd recommend u went on that, cos in my experience antibiotics are much less effective. maybe u could go on them when u come off dianette?? good luck!

Hey,
Thanks for the replies! Sounds like a pretty good plan to me, I'll probably give Dianette a go. As you say, if there aren't really any bad side effects and if the acne doesn't come back worse, then it might be the best option. To be fair, I'm 20 now and at times I'm willing to try anything!! And if I did grow out of acne in a few years, that would be even better! eusa_pray.gif
