Don't get me wrong, I love the effect this antibiotic is having on my skin. I'm clearer than I've been in years (although the Retin-A and Benzac could be helping, too...), but seriously....the side effects are killing me.

Not ONLY is it messing with my birth control (I was spotting pretty heavily for a few days...it's been a lonely month, so I know it was the antibiotic), but I'm fairly certain I now have a yeast infection.

Fun.

Not only is sex not fun now because I'm worried about makin' babies (don't worry, I'll use backup when I get back 'round to making the bed shake), but now it is physically uncomfortable in my nether regions.

Sorry if that was TMI, but I just had to vent. Anyone else experiencing these issues?

Well personally the "lady" issues didnt affect me (i hope they didnt lol) since im a guy.

though one main side efect i got with minocycline when i was on them is slight brain swelling.

doctor sent me for a scan and everything, results came back positive for a increased brain size.

he then put me on erythromycin.

good stuff smile.gif

I had horrible headaches while on it and had to stop after 2 weeks because it was literally smashing my head. However I do know that antibiotics are not recommended while taking birth control pills at the same time, I wonder why you did it. I suggest you go to a gynaecologist and get it checked before your yeast infection gets worse and affect your fertility. Yeast infections are one of the most common infections associated with antibibiotics but can be taken care off with certain meds so do not wait!

Ummm Yeah. Those side effects are a little more extreme than what they should be...for such a minor antibiotic. You shouldn't be having nearly as bad effects.

Well you can get a yeast infection while on any kind of antibiotic, it upsets the balance and kills off too much of the benefitial bacteria which keeps the yeast in check. That's pretty common. Same thing with the birth control pills, common with antibiotics of all sorts.

Call your Doctor's office and tell them about it, they might switch you to something else.

Heh, thanks guys.

I think the yeast infection (if that's what it was....it might just have been skin irritation) has gone away. It was at its worst when I wrote the post, but when I woke up the next morning I felt much better. And now it seems to just be recovering. A little itchy (ooooooh, TMI? sorry), but other than that nothing.

As for why I'm taking BC and antibiotics at the same time...

Well, I was already on birth control for *gasp* birth control. My derm knew it, still prescribed me the meds. I know it interferes with birth control, so I'm not planning on running around having unsafe sex. Condoms, people! Anyway, I had my yearly appt with my gynecologist scheduled already, so I'll see her in a few days.

And actually, these are very common side effects. In fact, so common they're on the side effects info for the drug!

I was just bitching and wanted to know who else was suffering.

i was taking min for 7 months and after quittting it 2 weeks later my mouth started being very dry and my tonge had a white texture it it....my doc said it was from the antibiotics and perscribed me an mouth wash.....oral antibiotics shuld only be used short term (3months max) to get teh problem undercontrol and shoudl be used with a retinoid like retin-a or tazorac. i am soo upset at doctors for beign so casual about puting ppl on antibiotics for years....it has totaly upset my stomach and my whole system:(

right now im using a topical antibiotic instead (clindamycin) does anyone know if these have teh same effects as oral antibiotics...or are they safer?

They definitely have fewer side effects, but I don't think they're as effective, for me at least. I was on Clindamycin for a couple months, and had no results. And yeah, I def agree about derms putting people on antibiotics for years....mine wants me on it for 4 months, max.

Be careful...during AND after my 1.5 years on Minocycline, I got yeast infections regularly and still am very susceptible to them.
