I went back to the derm today hoping to be put on accutane, but after i told him i get depressed sometimes, he opted out of giving me it because he was afraid i would get even more depressed. uughh!!!!!

So he gave me doxycyline instead. i was on minocycline before that, and it did nothing. isn't this stuff basically the same thing? just more expensive? i feel like i'm being ripped off.

I just don't really know much about this drug, so if anyone knows anything about it that would be great!

I believe that Doxy is stronger than Mino. Antibiotics will work differently for people so just because Mino didn't work doesn't mean Doxy won't either. I'm sure if this doesn't work after a month either you'll get your precious accutane. eusa_angel.gif

Doxicycline is in the same family of drugs as Minocycline (tetracycline family). It is different than minocycline.

I was on doxy for about a year...even though my dermatologist swore it would not loose effectiveness, it did and I broke out pretty bad recently. eusa_doh.gif Yeah, I am begining to learn that dermatologist can't help me, after years of going there. I am now off doxy (just out of college and no health insurance to keep going back to the dermatologist) and I broke out even worse. I can't remember it being this bad before, where I don't even want to go outside. I wish now that I never even went on it, because I feel like I lost time to find a real cure. It seems like most people find that antibiotics loose their effectiveness, even if they do work for awhile.

OK so I've been on Doxycycline for about 2 weeks now, and I have yet to see any changes in my skin. How long do you think it will be before I see results?
At this point I really hate this antibiotic because of the severe stomach pains associated with it, but I'm going to give it a try because I'm so desperate.
I don't think that the extreme cold weather we've been having lately Isn't really helping my skin, but I was hoping I would have seen at least some clearning by now.
BLAAAHHH I just want something to work!!!!!

My derm prescribed me doxy as well. He told me to take it for a month or two and then see if it works. I've only been on it for a week, it has stopped my huge cystic acne from getting any bigger. I got the stomaches too!! Take it an hour or two after a MEAL! It helps..trust me!

Besides antibacterial action, doxycycline appears to produce anti-inflammatory effects. It is an old antibiotic and widely available in generic formulations. So it should not be expensive.

Take it with food and you will be fine. Doxy has the tendency to cause gasey stomach. Both doxy and mino worked for me but I took mino for 2 weeks only cos it was giving me terrible headaches. It worked on my acne but it smashing my head in return wasn't worth it. Doxy on the other hand was the only antibiotic that truely worked for me. Believe it or not, I was on it for about 5 years before it lose its effectiveness and I'm finally put on tane. Yeah you should opt for the generic doxy, it should work. I was on the generic and it cost only $15 per month.

I was in the same boat, except when i started taking minocycline it was my miracle drug, i immediately saw results and they lasted for about 7 months i guess until my body became resistant to the antibiotics. so then my derm gave my doxy which did nothing, then they gave me a pill called cephadroxyl which began to help but not to the extent that the minocycline did, and then when i told him that i think i needed to take a course of accutane he says to try doxy again, and then before the month was over my dad's insurance kicked me off!! Now im trying to get some low income insurance stuff and go from there to get some of that Tane!! take it from me, even if those doxy work for you, it will only be a matter or time before your body begins resisting it and then its going to be harder to get rid of it like mine!! although some people's body takes a while before it rejects it..good luck!!

Gah this sucks. I have been on the Doxy for 3 weeks now and my skin SUCKS! I go back to my stupid-ass derm next week, and I'm just hoping that he understands that nothing is working and that It's time for accutane.
I got really depressed tonight after looking at a picture someone took of me and seeing how bad my skin looks. I don't think I can deal with this anymore, so if the doctor does not give me accutane this time, I promise I'm finding another one.
BUT if he does give me accutane and I start taking it now, I'm really worried about dryness, being that It's winter in Chicago. But I'm at the point that I can deal with the side effects I just want a drug that I feel is working.
After hearing all the bad stories about antibiotics, I don't even know why dermatologists still perscribe it.

I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! 6 years is just too damn long to deal, so enough is enough!
