Retinoids are needed to have any kind of change in pore size and skin texture. Antibiotics won't help with that.

Yes, it can be. It is prescribed a lot, especially in topical form. It has a bit less risk for serious side effects than other antibiotics, and from what I understand can be used in situations when other types of antibiotics can't (like during pregnancy, for example). Tetracyclines and sulfa drugs both have some very serious potential side effects. Rare, yes, but a possibility nonetheless. I used erythromycin topically for probably 6 months. It can be slightly less effective orally than a tetracycline, but it really depends. In general it should work pretty well.

do NOT go on bactrim. it has serious side effects, and its not gonna help you a lot.
if you are not allergic to pennicillin, I suggest you go on doxycycline - 100mg twice a day.
Minocycline is pretty good too, but i prefer doxy!
You can also slow down oil release into your skin by using Retinoids. Start with tretionoid. If you are male, accutane wouldnt be a bad choice. if you are female, stay off from accutane. It can have serious side effects on your hormonal productions.

I was on Septra, same as Bactrim. It helps a lot of people. It helped me. Sulfa drugs have been around for decades and are very safe...except if you are allergic to sulfa drugs. Then the side effects/reactions can be very dangerous. This is why sulfa drugs are prescribed with caution.
