Wouldn't going to the tanning salon have the same effect?
What's the difference between these lamps and the tanning salon?

Tanning salons put out mostly UVA light (320-400nm), designed to tan the skin. This causes some skin damage (all tanning does), but the UVB and UVC (below 320nm) are very harmful and *should* be filtered out (but who knows with cut rate tanning machines?) Although some UV kills P-acnes bacteria (around 320nm light), I suspect that the tanning salon lights don't peak at that exact frequency, but have a peak in the middle of the UVA range, maybe 360nm?) It would definitely be below 400 nm.
The lights we are investigating for acne treatment are based on the British Study that found 415 nm ultra blue light to be effective against acne, and that light is above the UV range, so it does not cause any skin damage (although you must always protect eyes from bright lights, especially blue spectrum light). You can read up a lot more on this on our other thread entitled Internet Alternatives
