Hello,

I am a 27 yr old male of Indian origin. I consulted with a derm regarding my acne scars and she suggested that I get a procedure done with the Palomar Lux 1540 laser. She suggested 4 sessions for a cost of $1200/session. Has any one with dark skin tone tried this procedure? I am a little apprehensive because this technology is new in the market and not many people seem to have tried this. Please let me know whether this laser is safe and effective for my skin type. I have moderate to deep scarring on my cheeks and mild to moderate scarring elsewhere. Also, she told me that there is no downtime after the procedure, but by searching on the internet I came to know that the skin gets swollen and turns pink after the session. I wonder how long it takes for this reaction to disappear and whether it makes one look weird? How long would it take to see the final results?

Please help!

im not fammilar with this laser, however for people with darker skin tone there is a higer risk because the laser can lead to hyperpigmentation. I am also of indian descent and my mother used laser and got two nasty hyperpigmentation marks under her eyes and now has to pay for alternative treatments to remove them. I suggest an another route rather than lasers.

chemical peels, microderm, vibraderm.

The Palomar 1540 is fractional resurfacing like the Fraxel. I liked the Palomar. I'm white and I've had 5 Fraxels on my face for scarring and one 1540 on my chest for sun damage. Both worked in the same way. My friend is Italian and when she got the fractional resurfacing, she was red and swollen. My point is that we found out that the "downtime" varies from person to person even though we both had strong treatments.

~Consider that whenever you do something invasive like a laser treatment, and especially on darker skin, there is risk. You've seen what can happen, so you just have to ask yourself if it is worth it if something like that happens to you. In the meantime, find out what you can do to minimize risk.

Dark skin has more melanin, so you should use hydroquinone to suppress the pigment for a couple of months before your Palomar treatment to minimize the risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Ask your doctor about that and maybe she can give you a cream or a prescription to prep your skin before the procedure.

Good Luck!!!
