a little background info...im 23 (male) and never had any skin problems on my face. a few months ago i started flushing and my face was getting very oily (when ive never had oily skin) and flaking. the dermatologist said it was rosacea and seb derm. since then ive been breaking out slightly here and there. my forehead gets small red pimples that don't forma head (papules i guess?). those last a few weeks but go away. i get regular pimples here and there on the lower half of my face (especially under the nose where its very oily) but they usually go away pretty quickly. a couple days ago i started getting a bump next to my nose. at first it hurt when i touched it, but today it kind of stopped hurting. it's a thick hard feeling bump under the skin. the area on and around it is very red and extra oily. it doesnt have a head really, just a kind of red shiny bump about the size of a pencil eraser. what is this? a cyst? a nodule? how long will it take to go away? should i expect to start getting more? i've never had anything like this on my face. ive read that for nodules you should go to your dermatologist asap for a cortisone shot, but i cant get in with my derm for a few weeks. can my regular physician do it? please help, i need this gone (hopefully) in about a week
edit: here are the pictures. these are the best i could get with the camera i had

also, do nodules/cysts always hurt? i'm kind of confused because everything i've read about them online says they hurt, but mine doesnt hurt. it did a little the first day but hasn't since then. today its not as red as it was yesterday either. if i pull the skin really tight the top of it looks white.
thanks

Rosacea left untreated can cause bumps from excess tissue. This is called rhinophyma (pronounced "rhi-no-FY-muh"). Are you under the care of a doctor or derm? If not, you should have it checked out. There are medications that may help.
First, determine what it is. If it is caused by rosacea, it's a different kind of lesion and I don't *think* that cortisone is used or will help (but I'm not an expert). At 23, you're a bit young for actual rosacea, but apparently it can be caused after using accutane. (Something I didn't know until I got here.)
Good luck. Let us know how things turn out.

uggh, now you have me worried. if it was a nodule at least i would know it would go away. i thought rhunophyma was only in older people and advanced stages of rosacea. i've only had rosacea for like 6 months and it's barely noticeable so far. the first dermatologist i saw (about 2 months ago) looked and my face and diagnosed seb derm. i went to a better derm and she said i had seb derm and a little rosacea. that was about a month ago. my face has been extremely oily, which i'm assuming is the seb derm? im assuming thats accounted for most of the pimples as well. is it possible to get rhinophyma this early into rosacea? the bump is a little smaller than the size of a pencial eraser, so it's not huge or anything. at first it hurt, like a pimple. would rhinophyma hurt like that? i'll get a picture later on tonight so you dan see what it looks like.
im really stressed out now and worried about rhinyphyma. my nose isn't red at all so it's confusing to me. please help. thanks

It is not rhinophyma. Rhinophyma does not look like that.
I can't really tell the color because of the lighting in the picture. But, it is probably something that a dermatologist will have to deal with. Every once in a while with my seborrheic dermatitis I will just get a big red bump, then after a week or two it will just go away. I don't know what it is, and have not heard about it, or if it has to do with SD or not. I just know for me they go away in a week or two.

The photos were very helpful. I agree with Not. It does not look like rhinophyma. Unfortunately, I really don't know what it is either. Is it getting any better?

From the looks of it, it appears to be a cyst. I haven't had one that pertrudes that much before, but the skin near the nose is somewhat shallow which could explain it.
I would go see a derm (if cost is not an issue) as a cyst can last a really long time. I had one under my eye for a good 3-4 months before it went away and it left a deep scar. (this was when I was in my teens, now in my early 20's and it has slowly faded away) With that said, the majority of my cysts would go away within a week or two.

Dont worry - this definitely does not look like rhinophyma which I just looked up as being:
The third stage is characterized by swelling and growth of the nose and central facial areas. At times the ears may be involved as well. This can be very disfiguring. This stage is known as rhinophyma. Most patients do not progress to the third stage of rosacea.
Rhinophyma is not characterised by one lump but rather by the swelling of the whole of the nose (pic attached)
Can't actually believe someone suggested rhinophyma - stupid way to freak someone out completely!

dude, that is a zit. Just pop it, but make sure to use a needle. Also, put the needle over a flame to sanitize it and then once popped, use a tissue with a tab of alcohol on the skin. There is no need to see a derm over one zit.....come on now.
If there are more coming up, then I would for sure see a derm because the best practice to get ride of pustular acne is prevention and if they are deeper nodular, than accutane is the answer, despite what others may say. Of course, I would ask my derm for other options but for seb derm and rosacea, a low dose is usually adminstered if that. Seb derm would cause flakes and it kept under control through anti-dandruff shampoos and antifungals. Just use google really.
