Hey guys. I'm one week into my 3rd month on accutane. I am still not at all happy with my progress....though I have had improvements, I still have breakouts and am definitely not ready to bare my skin sans-makeup (red marks, bumps, blech). So here's the deal....I'm going on a road-trip, complete with camping some nights, with a guy that I like SO much. We've been seeing each other for almost 6 months and he hasn't seen me without makeup. He knows I'm on accutane, but says it's for my 'non existent acne problem' - the thing is, he doesn't see me without makeup! And I'm TERRIFIED for this trip because of the camping. I know some places will have running water, but mirrors, etc, are not likely, and I am just plain NOT ready for him to see me without makeup! WHAT DO I DO???? Does anyone have suggestions/tips/ideas??? I'm so mad/sad that I haven't cleared by now, but I can't pass up this opportunity to see the west (U.S) and spend time with my guy...and I HATE that acne even plays a part in how I plan for/enjoy this trip!

just go, who cares. i was on accutane too and never wore makeup. you can get some cetaphil to wash with, as you can use it with or without water. if you are concerned by the lack of mirrors just bring your own mirror.

What kind of makeup do you use? I use mineral makeup (Jane iredale) and it has the best coverage for me with the least amount of problems. It stays when you put it on and it doesn't melt when you are warm and it doesn't clog pores. I went camping with my boyfriend and I went to the creek at night and washed my face and then got up really early in the morning and washed my face and put my moisturizer on and my mineral makeup on. It covers red marks incredibly well and it looks velvety through out the day and it doesn't look fake. I also use thier bronzer over the base which bronzer is known to hide red marks really well. I think you will do great. Most of your skin is clear, so at least it's not your entire face and you are beautiful so he won't be looking at your cheeks I'm sure. And congratulations on letting him know you are on accutane, that is a big step. And if he already says he doesn't see it, then I think you are going to do fine!

thank you so much. you are so sweet. i really need the encouragement right now. it is just so hard to be so far along and still breaking out, and i have been so 'perfect' around him always that i don't want him to be shocked about my gross acne. but i suppose it would be rather shallow of him if he was, since he knows i'm on accutane for it and that i have really been struggling trying to get clear. it may look gross, but it isn't my FAULT, and i'm trying my best to make it go away.
i use estee lauder double wear and mary kay concealer. both are non-acnegenic, and provide pretty good coverage, as long as i moisturize well so i don't get flaky. i guess i will be mostly okay as long as i can find a way to wash my face and to get makeup on before he wakes up or something. i just hope i can convince him to use the campsites that have running water.

Go, it sounds fun! If you know you'll be away from water, bring a large multi-gallon jug of water and you can use it in a pinch to rise your face. I have gone multi-day backpacking in the Northern Cascade mountains while taking Accutane, lugging along a tiny folding mirror and lotions and Cetaphil and all, and have been fine. =)

I completely understand the perfect part. I always have my polished look on and Believe me I was freaked out when he asked me to go camping, but I didn't want him to think that I was snobby or a princess and I wanted to spend time with him and his friends. He had no idea I was scared to death and was praying the whole ride that we would arrive at a camp site with showers and running water. Nope. I got a creek. A freezing cold creek. I didn't even bring a mirror because I didn't want to look. I just washed my face, slabbed on my moisturizer and brushed on my minerals. In the evenings I had a beer with everybody and that calmed down my anxiety
I woke in the twilight and washed my face. He thought I was a morning person and a wilderness person after that

It sounds like he really likes you so it shouldn't matter what you look like under the make up.
Go for it, and enjoy yourself

thanks for all the replies. my anxiety about this is probably lame, i just can't help it. i'm just so freaking angry that i'm not clearing up better. i was thinking i should also (in addition to a jug of water & washclothes, in case there's not running water some places) bring some of those makeup remover wipe thingys? anybody have any experience with them or know of a brand that wouldn't make me break out and that might be okay to use?

hey, I also completely understand. I also agree with the suggestion of mineral make-up because it is so fast to put on....
Maybe those make-up remover wipes are a good idea. I don't know any brands, but I think it may be best to get hypo-allergenic/neutral ones without perfume to avoid irritation....
have fun and try not to worry too much about it!
