What exactly is the purpose of a toner? Should everyone use one? What about benzoyl peroxide and what difference does the percent make? Should you use it if you're already using topical prescription acne medications?

>What exactly is the purpose of a toner?
Generally speaking they are supposed to soothe aggravated skin from abrasive cleansers, sometimes they replenish moisture loss from harsh chemicals, sometimes (like ACV) they are used to maintain the balance of pH on your skin's dermis.
>Should everyone use one?
Dan says that essentially they are not mandatory and even a waste. Its a matter of preference. The ones that contain alcohol should be avoided at all costs.
>what about benzoyl peroxide and what difference does the percent make?
2.5% is the percentage recommended on the DK Regimen, because you use such mass amounts of it that the smaller percentage is adequate in killing bacteria. You want the least % possible to avoid irritation, which can cause breakouts. OTC Products come in 2.5%, 5% & 10%, but just because its "maximum strength" doesnt mean you should use it!
>Should you use it if you're already using topical prescription acne medications?
Usually not, but some are ok (differin actually works better in conjunction with BP, and Duac contains 1% Clindamycin & 5% Benzoyl peroxide) ...what topicals specifically?

Hi- Its been my understanding that a toner helps remove the final traces of oil, makeup, cleaner and closes your pores. Opinion varies on whether you actually need it or should use it. i've had dermotalogists tell me different things. I wouldn't (not to say I haven't ) used bp with prescription acne meds-- it could make you redder. good luck-

Thankyou for the information! I am currently using Differin in the morning and Benzaclin at night.

Oh, um.. I must have forgotten.
hehe n/p just wanted to be sure you dont use BP in addition to your regimen because you'd kill your skin...waaaay too much peroxide.
Obviously you see a derm based on your topicals, are you unsatisfied on the results or just learning more about treatments?

I definitely will not use benzoyl peroxide now. I was unsatisfied with the results, but now that I'm reading and learning more about what (and what not) to use, things will hopefully get better.

That's good to know, because I don't think I'll use a toner either unless my skin starts acting up.
