Out of curiosity can a person of 18 years of age with cystic acne just request accutane and be given it? I have been researching it over the past year and like most people I am interested but my doctor insists on "never giving it to me." Well I am about to turn 18 and will be seeing him soon to have a cyst injected with cortisone. Can he still deny me the tane if I request it from him? The only thing that has helped my acne somewhat has been antibiotics and those eventually lose their effect after some time and I cannot see myself taking antibiotics for the rest of my life. It's jsut not healthy. I always hear these people who wait forever to go on accutane and then ask themselves why after they go on it. I don't wanna wait any longer and am wondering if it's something I can easily obtain or will I continually be denied? There are only 3 main derms in my city and I know for a fact I cannot afford one of them and the other works in the same office as the one I am going to at the moment. I just want him to give me a chance.

try the other derm that works in the office, there is no reason they would give it to you simply because you are 18, they will give it to you if they feel you would benefit from it.

Not to sound like a smartass but, won't everyone benefit from it? And I only mentioned the 18 thing because I remember someone on this forum saying how because they were an adult (18+) they had the right the demand accutane.

no, it won't benefit everyone. and you can't just demand a prescription drug and the doctor has to give it to you, that is not how prescription drugs work. if that were the case drug addicts could just go to the Drs and just demand oxycontin and whatever else they want, it would be a lot cheaper and easier than getting it from other means. the doctor will only prescribe drugs that s/he feels are an appropriate treatment for the patient. you can ask for accutane, and i think you should, but the doctor is not obligated to prescribe it for you.

/\Yes, this is what I thought from the start. I just read that comment a little while back and it sort of got me thinking the wrong way. Oh well, wishful thinking cannot always be right.

defenitly see another derm. if it is bad enough for you to have to come in and get cysts injected someone should give you accutane. i had mild acne, and wanted it gone, so i went in for accutane. got totally denied. so i went on aad.org and searched all the derms in my area and started making appointments....the 4th one gave it straight to me. im completely clear now.

well ironically, when I wanted to go on it, my first derm thought it was a last result type of thing 2nd one wanted to put me on it practically right away--by that time I didn't wanna go on it ....3rd one...suggested it on my first visit to her...I denied it. She kept persisting after I didn't go on the mino again, and finally, I agreed with her after about 5 or 6 laser treatments
I think it just really depends on the age of the derm. my 1st one... [really really old guy...prolly close to 50 years in his field] 2nd... middle age... didn't like him that much nor his clerks.... and this 3rd one... she looks really young... love the office.. and I've actually gotten on the phone with her almost immediately...never happened before... so perhaps, just find a young one
age really has nothing to do with it. a friend of mine was prescribed accutane when she was maybe 13/14..because she wanted to enter into a beauty pageant ...but she even got it from her pediatrician! this was before ipledge & the generics though, so maybe back in 00 or 01 or something?
