I was kind of hpoing some of you veterans like Romeo and autonomous would give their 2 cents worth. What do you guys think of the Saw palmetto and DHT link, there does not seem to be anything on this topic on this board but there are references on the net, it works in theory...... eusa_think.gif

im just about to start taking my new updated version of my herbal tincture made up by my naturopath. it contains, Saw palmetto, dandelion, nettle, oats, licorice, burdock root, yellow dock, blue flag, chaste tree.

I really hope saw palmetto can work. Im using this UPDATED herbal stuff for 5 weeks, of course along with a very clean, healthy diet. no dairy either!

I think saw palmetto can be an effective acne treatment for mild/moderate acne. While its mechanism hasn't been completely isolated, most studies hint that it works by inhibiting dht. If your acne/bacne is caused by excess sebum, this could help. My theory is that most acne is caused by either an excess of dht, or an increased genetic sensitivity to dht at the androgen receptor. In either case, lowering the amount of dht present should help. The only thing I fear is an overinhibition of dht could cause problems such as sexual side effects and mental foggyness. These are side effects associated with finasteride and dutasteride, much more potent dht inhibitors. However with saw palmetto this is less likely to happen. This is just to say that its dose is much more adjustable, it is still a potent drug. If you notice side effects, you can begin to lower your dosage more easily. I wouldn't recommend this drug for severe acne since in order to see effects, you would likely have to take many many capsules, and the risk of side effects become noticeably higher.

I think the trick here is to find the effective dosage. I would start maybe with 2 capsules of 320 extract, or 4 160 extract. Then adjust dosage according to the results. I'm hoping the effective dosage for prostate treatment (320) would be sufficient for most mild/moderate acne but who knows.

Also, taking this medication is only recommended for men who have finished adolescence. I am going to try taking 4 caps a day for a few weeks and see if this helps with my mild bacne

Interesting. I've never taken it personally so I cannot say how it works, but since dht is an androgen, and if acne is only caused by excess dht (the metabolism product of testosterone), then it will surely help. If, though, acne is caused by other androgens (there are plenty) then other methods are good. But it's very true, if you can supress and control excess androgens, it will clear you up. Same thing happened with me. About a month a half into fish oil, my body acne just stopped dead in it's tracks, the excess oil production went away, and I don't use any more products on my back. Just water!

It may be worth a shot, the only thing I do not know is how it will interfere in development for adolescents.

I believe the main way it works spefically is by preventing dht to bind to androgen receptors. And you can see how that can stop sebum production.

Good link to read

Hope that helps

Just want to report that I am getting off the saw palmetto. After a week or so, I definitely noticed a drop in libido and energy. Instead, I bought some raw flax oil. I have been taking flax/fish oil for months nut always in low doses. So maybe a higher doses of the stuff will help.

jemini, are you drinking enough water? I've been taking saw, and whenever I feel low energy, it's usually that I've not been drinking enough water. Saw is making me more thirsty than usual, and also making me crave salt.

I drink plenty of water. Since taking sp I noticed I stopped waking up with morning wood. And I don't mess with the morning wood.

The morning wood......shit.

I started this thread a while ago but only started taking sp a couple of days ago. That loss of stiffness is a bit worrying though.

I am taking a 1000mg tab which only has 62mg if fatty acids/sterols, so I need to take 5-6 to get the equivalent of a 320mg standardized cap. Bought a shit supplement basically, and I got 360 of em.....

How much were you taking jemini, becuase if you were using the standardized stuff I would say you were overdosing.
