To anyone who is reading a lil about myself
1) 22 years old male suffering from mild/severe cystic acne
approx 2 years back: suffered from acne on jawline, chin, neck area, chest and back.
2) been on accutane (oratane) approx 2 year back at 20mg per day for 10 months. Was 100% cleared and suffered no scarring on the face and neck, but had minor keloid scaring on chest and shoulders. Keloids were injected with cortisone steroids and are no longer bumpy but left some pigmentation scars
3) acne relapsed approx 4 months ago but not so severe this time around but still got it on the same areas as before. Major areas were the jawline, chin and neck.
4) went to a derm approx 2 months back. A summary of what went through in the 2 months period is listed below:
Day1 ~ Day7
On Day1 visited a new derm really depressed then since acne was at its worst since the relapse.
- Oral Medication Taken: Antibiotics, Vibramycin (tetracyline) 2 standard pills 2 times a day for 7 days.
Day8 ~ Day28
On Day8 visited derm again. Acne getting better after antibiotic treatment, but was still pretty bad. Showed derm Oratane taken in my 1st course and was subsequently placed on Rocaccutane.
- Oral Medication Taken: Antibiotics, Minocycline 1 standard pill 1 time a day for 14 days.
Accutane (Oratane) 20mg per day for 20 days.
- Topical Medication Used: Galderma's Benzac AC 2.5 benzoyl peroxide to be apply once daily.
Nivea's Repair and Protection Chap Stick.
Day29 ~ Day59
On Day 29 visited derm and had a fasting lipids test done and an X-ray taken (kinda strange it was not taken earlier....hmmm). X-ray results were normal and had to wait for fasting lipids results (look at Day60), was kindly worried cause had already been on Rocaccutane for 20days.
- Oral Medication Taken: Accutane (Rocaccutane) 20mg per day for 30 days.
- Topical Medication Used: Galderma's Benzac AC 2.5 benzoyl peroxide to be applied in the mornings.
T3 Mycin Clindamycin Gel 1% to be applied at night.
Unilever's Vaseline Lip Therapy
Sebapharma's Sebamed Liquid Face and Body Wash (used 2 times daily, pea size to wash face)
Nivea's Repair and Protection Chap Stick.
Coppertone Oil Free Faces with Vit A&E SPF30 Sunblock (used in the morning after shower on face)
St. Ives Whipped Silk Intense Body Moisturizer (for body application)
Day 60 (TODAY)
Visited derm again today. Was nervous about the results of the lipids test. The 50 days on accutane really (I mean really) helped my skin. All previous acnes are completely healed and only some slight scarring at places where the acnes use to be. I expect them to be gone in 3 weeks or less (keeping fingers crossed have a wedding to attend next week end). Yesterday I got a small active white head above my right eyebrow though. Popped it in the shower this morning and applied some Benzac to it, now it can be considered inactive and its looking good. Fortunately the Lipids test were normal. The following are my lipid's test results:
Total Cholesterol 4.1 mmol/L (< 5.2)
Triglyceride 0.60 mmol/L (<1.68)
HDL Cholesterol 2.08 mmol/L (>1.08)
LDL Cholesterol 1.75mmol/L (<2.58)
Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio 2.0 (<5.0)
Total Protein 86 g/L (60-82)
Albumin 48 g/L (35-50)
Globulin 38 g/L (20-39)
Albumin/Globulin ratio 1.3 (1.0-2.5)
Alkaline Phosphatase 76 U/L (30-120)
Total Bilirubin 17 umol/L (<21)
GGT 19 U/L (<51)
AST 23 U/L (<41)
ALT 15 U/L (<51)
My total protein count was slightly on the high side but my derm said it was fine. I was really relief that the test result were good cos the acne is really responding well to the accutane. The following are the medication given today.
- Oral Medication Taken: Accutane (Rocaccutane) 20mg per day for 30 days.
- Topical Medication Used: Galderma's Benzac AC 2.5 benzoyl peroxide to be applied on active acnes in the mornings.
Galderma Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser (to use twice daily)
I am reluctant to try the Cetaphil as the Sebamed is really workig well for me. Sebamed is a German brand a pea size amount lathers relatively well and after cleansing my skin does not feel dry/flaky. It also contains allatoin which apparently helps skin to heal. However for the past 2 days my skin does feel a bit tight but upon closer inspection it does not look dry or flaky at all, perfectly normal looking (strange???). I will have to monitor this for a couple of days.
Starting tommorow i will also change my diet to approx 95%+ vegetarian, with plenty of wholegrains, greens and fruits plus a multivit, a vit B5 supplement and a Zinc supplement. I have already stocked up on these items. This might increase the efficiency of my body's immune system which may allow my scars to heal faster. I am determined to take care of my body (thus indirectly my skin) seriously I hope i will have the discipline to follow through on this plan (wish me luck!!). I will update the log with my diet plan once its ready.
Sorry for posting such a long one. Thats about it for now.
