OK, I am VERY new here on this message board, and I am still trying to figure out how it all works, so if I say or post something stupid, please forgive my ignorance. I will be starting Accutane on February 9th, and I stumbled across this website in an attempt to get more info about Accutane, and all of the side affects it causes.

My face was always very clear as a teenager, and I did not really experience any break outs until I was pregnant with my first son (at age 20). My OB/GYN assured me that it was just hormones, but it was REALLY awful, and I really wanted to have the baby so my face would clear up. Well after he came, unfortunately my face stayed just the same. I tried a few different birth control pills in an attempt to clear it up, but to no avail.

So at some point 2-3 years later, I finally broke down and went to see a dermatologist. He diagnosed me with rosacea and gave me a prescription for Tetracycline, and some Metronidazole gel for my face. Initially, the results were astounding, and my face remained clear for almost a year, although the monthly yeast infections caused by the antibiotics were very annoying.

But of course the bacteria became resistant, and I started having trouble again. My doctor switched me to Minocycline, and my face improved again, although not so dramatically this time. But then a few months later, I became pregnant with my second son and had to discontinue all acne meds (or the pills at least) and so I was once again pregnant and miserable with my acne.

Once my second son was born, I was put back on the Minocycline, and stayed on it for about two years. My dermatologist was constantly adding topicals to my regimen in hopes of reducing the amount of antibiotics I was taking, but they all seemed to be too strong or too weak. Salicylic Acid, and Benzoyl Peroxide really don’t do much, and Differin gel made my face turn into one giant scab.

At some point about 3 years ago, I lost my insurance and had to give up on dermatologist help altogether. So I have been self medicating, but slowly getting worse over the years instead of better. I have had a few moths of remission here and there during the winter (not this winter though), but it always comes back, even worse than before. Most notably is the fact that I used to only get acne on my chin, but now I have it almost everywhere on my face. My face is TERRIBLY oily, and I don’t even bother with make-up because it just slides off within hours of application. I just recently (past 3-4 months) started getting cysts on my neck and jaw line. Plus I always have little bumps all over my shoulders, chest, and lower back.

Luckily, I finally have medical insurance again, and I got a referral to a seemingly great dermatologist. When I went to see him, I was prepared with a long list of reasons why I wanted Accutane, but he talked to me for a couple minutes, looked at my face, and suggested Accutane. I was stoked! So I got my blood work done, and got enrolled in the iPledge program. My appointment to start Accutane is Friday, February 9th. I will post pics when I can but in the meantime I am looking for advice about a few things.

I see that a lot of people take Vitamin E, but how much do I need to take? Should I start now or wait until I start Accutane?

I have always had dry lips, so I have lots of lip balm already, but I was wondering what the best lip balm is for Accutane. I usually use Carmex, but I have not seen many people choosing that brand. Is there a reason why?

I am also concerned about what to use on my face. I have always used drying face wash and never any moisturizer (due to my oily skin) so now I am not sure what to start with. Cetaphil? Clinique?

Does anybody know about hair color while on Accutane? I usually darken my hair every month or two with auburn hair color, but I don’t want to burn my scalp or anything. Anybody have personal experience with this?

So anyway, thanks for any information anybody has, and wish me luck on my journey to clear skin!

Hi Kimberly! Just wanted to stop by and wish you luck with your tane journey. It can be quite the rollercoaster ride sometimes but I'm sure you'll find that it's worth it in the end!

For the vitamin E - I took one/day (not sure how many mg it was). I'm not sure if it'll make any difference if you start taking it now, but it won't hurt either. Might also want to take Omega 3 - this can help with joint pain.

If you get really chapped lips, you might want to try Dr. Dan's cortibalm (can order it online). It was good when my lips where dry and peely but I didn't find it really moisturizing so it helps to use something on top of it (I liked Softlips but Carmex would probably work too).

Lotion - I really like Aveena ultra-calming moisturizer.

I also colour my hair darker and didn't have a problem colouring it when I was on tane.

Hope this helps! If you have any more questions, ask away! smile.gif

OK, as time gets closer, I swear it it going slower! I still have almost two weeks until I get to start accutane doubt.gif I found out that even though my appointment is February 9th, I will have to wait until the bloodwork comes back before I can start. It will most likely be February 12th or 13th before I will really be able to pop my first pill. I am also getting a little bit paranoid about the dry skin side effects. I ordered a tube of Dr Dan's Cortibalm lip stuff today, I have ALWAYS been prone to dry, peely lips, even with my terribly oily skin. Oh well, just checking in. Any advice is much appreciated. I will wait to post my before pics until the day I take my first pill. Tick... tick...tick...

I am now on my 10th day of taking 40mg a day. Everything is going pretty well so far. My lips are very chapped still but getting better. My skin is jsut starting to get dry and I had a nosebleed earlier today. Nothing to horrible though. I'm not taking any Vitamin E because I don't know much about it. I am using Vaseline on my lips in the morning, right after my shower, and then before bed. It seems like this holds the moisture in for the longest. I am also using Blistex complete moisture throughout the day. This at least makes my lips feel better. I have always used blistex and thats why I chose that. Everything else that I am using is in my signature below for the face wash and lotion. I am trying to find a good moisturizer for at night but haven't bought anything yet. Thats a good question about hair color. I didn't even think about it. I am getting my hair highlighted soon so hopefully it doesnt matter. Let me know if you have any other questions!! biggrin.gif

Yay! I took my first pill last night! My derm put me on 40 mg 2 times daily to start. I am a big girl, so I figure that it won't give me any trouble, even though it is kind of a high dose. When I went to pick up the meds last night I was afraid of the cost, but it ended up only costing me $10 for two boxes of Claravis 40 mg, so I was pretty happy. eusa_dance.gif Here are some pics I just took this morning. I hope to update them weekly to help me monitor my progress. My face is not actually too bad right now, I guess because it is winter, but you can still see that I have a lot of redness and bumps. Well, wish me luck everyone, and I look forward to the new me soon!

So today is day 7 and I am seeing changes in my skin for sure. My skin is still oily, but feels dry and tight under the oil if that makes any sense. I think my skin is a little less oily, but it is hard to tell for sure yet. I can still almost soak one of those blue oil-absorbing sheets by 10 am. My hair is still oily, and still has to be washed every morning. Every time I run my fingernails over my scalp, I keep coming away with little grainy chunks in my fingernails. I am assuming that these were clogged pores on my scalp that are pushing them selves out. It seems gross, but I am happy that it is happening because it shows me that the Claravis is working. I do have a few new pimples, one just under my lip, one on my cheek, and one in between my eyebrows. This is nothing new to me, so it is no big deal. All in all, my face seems a little smoother, and any new pimples do seem to be healing faster than normal which is nice. I am still waiting for the molt on my nose; it is all gross and full of blackheads. I would be so happy if they just all fell out like I have seen some people report.

My skin is starting to get itchy and flaky, and I made a big mistake last night by trying to scrub some of the flakiness off. I thought if I scrubbed gently with a soft washcloth that it could not hurt my face too bad, but I was wrong. Right after I rinsed my face and dried it off, it felt terrible, and when I put on my lotion (Eucerin redness relief facial lotion) my face stung like hell. This morning when I woke up my face looks and feels like I got sunburned. Lesson learned… I just started Bare Minerals make-up about a week ago, and I am really happy with the results. Once I put it on this morning, all my redness was gone (well not gone, but hidden under the make-up) and so I felt ok to face the world!

I just ordered some Clinique Exceptionally Soothing Cream for Upset Skin off the Clinique website, to the tune of $32.50. I hope that it is better than the Eucerin stuff. I think that stuff makes my face feel yucky and sticky. But the other moisturizers I have don’t seem to take away that “tight” feeling that my face seems to have all the time now. I guess it can be a process of “trial and error” so far as finding the right facial products for my face on Claravis.

Any other side effects I have had seem VERY minor. My mood seems to be fabulous! My boyfriend and I had a great Valentine’s Day yesterday. I surprised my kids with some really fabulous gifts, and my boyfriend with some fabulous naughty gifts, and all were happy. My boyfriend got me a great bracelet, and I am happy that he seems to have such great taste! I have had a couple of minor headaches, which I attribute to the Claravis, but they are easily cured with a couple of Advil pills. So no terrible mood swings or anything like that. But I am usually a pretty mentally stable person, so I was not expecting anything too dramatic. My main concern is my triglycerides. I have my next blood work scheduled for March 9th, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I will post some new pics in the gallery at some point this weekend, but I don’t think there is much change in what my face looks like, other than added redness. I am hoping the redness will fade if I am nicer to my skin though. Oh well, that is my update for now, if I have any major changes, I will post them here.

Laterz!

Well, here is day 18, and I am finally seeing some improvement. My IB has finally subsided, although my skin is still peeling pretty badly on my chin where the break out was the worst. But looking at my other pics, I can see that there is great improvement on my neck, and my forehead too (if you ignore that one pimple there).

I am having very few side effects, my lips are somewhat dry, as is the inside of my nose, but this is all easily cured with vaseline. I tried about a million different lip balms, but really only found relief with regular old vaseline, and vaseline lip therapy. That's great because it is really the cheapest!

I did buy the Clinique soothing cream for upset skin, and I really slather it on at night. It feels great! I have a few minor headaches here and there, but nothing too serious. So now my nose feels really like sandpaper, or a sharks skin if you have ever felt that. Is there anything I can do about that? I am tempted to scratch at it, but I have a feeling that would be a bad idea... Will this nasty skin just come off at some point?

Oh well, here are some pics from tonight. Have a great evening!!
