A Brief History of Me:
I'm a 21 year old guy going in college. I've been struggling with persistent mild-moderate acne on my face since 10th grade in high school. The defining moment in my acne carrer was when my skin was so bad that I didn't even want to go out and enjoy high school life with my buddies. I'd decided that enough was enough and I didn't want to deal with this s**t anymore. In the recent years, I've tried a whole bunch of products... topical over the counter, antibiotics, weird diets, even acutane, yadi yadi yadda
My Thoughts on Acne:
I intend on writing this for anyone to use, but I want emphasize a few pointers for guys specifically. The diet is a good approach for all.
Shaving:
Over the years, as I started to experience the first bouts of my acne were oddly enough the years where I started to shave. Soon, I began experiencing an immense amount of irritation using shave gel and a razor, plus topical acne treatments. Even with a "soothing" aftershave and using non-comedogenic lotions/moisturizers, I was breaking out more than ever. It wasn't until a few years down the road, that I even considered buying an electric beard trimmer (NOT an electric shaver. Boy was using an electric shaver even worse than shaving using a razor!!!). Now by shaving with an electric beard trimmer was by far the best move I had ever made! I cannot even express in words how it helped my skin heal and feel comfortable again. Now days I trim on the shortest setting ("1") or take the guard off and trim around sideburns, but i must emphasize taking the utmost care not to nick blemishes of any sort. Which leads me to my next point. I found that keeping my beard short was most efficient at keeping my acne flares to a minimum. My face seemed exceptionally oily when my beard started filling in and I found that it was harder to apply topical treatments. So just to keep things simple, my beard is kept to stubble length (*Just be sure to be gentle around your girlfriends! Sandpaper face doesn't make any friends, as I have found this out the hard way haha
Healthy Diet and Exercise:
I am confident that eating for clear skin is a reality. Everyone has heard that cliche saying: "You are what you eat." I am a firm believer in this fact despite many people will argue that scientific analysis states that there is no correlation between acne and diet. Here is my recommendation:
1) Daily Multivitamin
2) Raw Vegetables
3) No Dairy
4) No Sugar (processed/natural)
I've found that personally dairy products are not good for me or my skin (as well as many other people.. you may be one of them). I've just recently read an article on the importance of keeping intake of sugars to a minimum as sugar may cause acne to flare up. I've kept my sugar consumption to a minimum and have seen great results from this. I encourage you to try it out and see if you see progress.
Get out and sweat! Exercise for 30 minutes, atleast, per day! Sweat cleans out the pores and it helps bulster your body's immune system.
I've even taken it a step further and purchased a Far Infrared Sauna. I've read up on these things for quite sometime and I must say they are quintessential for maintaining unclogged pores and detoxifying your body. I recieved my sauna a month ago and swear by it. Although the down side to this method is price, I can definitely say that it has helped my skin leaps and bounds. But, I am certain that exercise alone is a great start and by no means am I saying that you have to go throw down a ton of money to get clear skin. It is a choice I made and I am very happy with it to maintain overall health of my body.
