My son's dermatologist perscribed Nicomide for him about a month ago. It is a perscription supplement
containing zinc, copper, and folic acid. I have no idea why you have to get a perscription for this. He's 21 and has gotten cystic acne around his nose, mouth, and chin for a couple of years now. He has acne similar to mine(I've had it for over 30 years, and am on antibiotics for almost 9 years.) He takes 2 pills a day, and I can't believe the improvement in his skin. It is almost perfectly clear now. It would probably be totally clear, except he forgets to take it twice a day sometimes. We are currently in a holding period with our insurance. They don't want to cover this, calling it a supplement. It's quite expensive, $60 a month. His doctor faxed them a letter yesterday saying he needs to take this because of acne, and not just as a supplement. They are supposed to get back to him in 24 hours, after they review this. I want to start taking this too, and see if it will help me. I would do anything (except Accutane) to get off of antibiotics. Has anyone one else taken this? If so, I'd like to hear what you have to say about it.

i was prescribed this but never took it because it wasn't covered. the derm gave me a $20 off coupon though. i'm on accutane now which my insurance does cover. good luck with the insurance.
btw what pharmacy do you use. my derm told me since it wasn't covered to go to either costco, walmart, or target. places like that because the prescriptions are cheaper there.

wow... that sounds amazing! i would love to try that. just wondering, are you male, or female? i'm female, and my acne is "hormonal," which i know because nothing has worked except the pill (which i cannot take, for other reasons). mine, too, is completely restricted to my chin and around the mouth. i have virtually perfect skin in all other areas -- drives me crazy! lol.
the acne i do have has been mild to moderate for about 11 years now, recently becoming severe. i wonder if that stuff would work for me...

I tired it a while ago. My insurance wouldn't cover it either....it was about 70$. I shouldn't have bought it. It made me sick to my stomach and gave me a week long headache. I stopped taking it....then tried again and I got sick to my stomach and another headache.....so I gave up.........and wasted 70$......
I've heard good things about it, but it just didn't agree with me......

I'm off Accutane!!!!! Six month course from 9/7/06 to 3/23/07......dosage ranged from 20mg a day to a whopping 120mg/day, giving a huge cumulitive dose of 262.5mg/kg. I'm clear, but will be using Tazorac for maintnence (and to keep any wrinkles that want to come up at bay)...... So you want to see my acne and 'tane results??? Lab's Gallery |

I get side effects from just about everything I take. With my luck, I won't be able to take it! Platinum I get side effects from almost everything I've ever taken, and I'm too afraid to try it. I'm taking Doxycycline, and I have to use 48 sunscreen all summer. For some reason, I didn't burn as easily this summer as last summer. I take calcium supplements, too. I make sure it's not within 3 hours of the Doxy. I hope that's o.k.

I found out yesterday that my insurance will now pay for my son's Nicomide. The doctor faxed them a letter stating that he's taking it for acne, not just as a supplement. It will save us about $165 over 3 months. I'm going to try it this month, too.
