I haven't met a chocolate that hasn't broken me out yet, tried just about every one of them...(except goat, hah)
Hmmmm...soy - I do drink Soy Chocolate Milk since I want to try and stay away from dairy (plus I'm lactose intolerant and I don't like Lactaid and those lactose-free products), and that does not seem to make me breakout at all. Well, I've long suspected that it's all psychological anyway...my masochicstic subconscious must be making a strong connection between my favorite food and the bane of my existence (acne), woe is me. :boohoo: So begins my quest for...goat chocolate? |

I'm going to put this in simple terms: cutting all dairy, all gluten, and foods as common as potatoes out of your diet leaves you with a VERY small list of possible dishes. You'll find 95% of products at stores to be off limits. You also find your wallet shrinking as you scramble to stay in the organic section...

^^^^exactly my point, this supposed "acne free" diet is almost impossible to manage, you cut out almost all commercial foods. even if this meant clear skin, which i doubt , i still wouldnt be too happy. personally, ive been unable to find any direct link between any specific types of food and acne. my breakouts are sporadic and occur throughout all different types of diets. the only thing i can directly link acne with is puberty and stress.

it is hard to manage!
remember bignosebandit, the point of the diet is to to follow it strictly to eliminate all possible causes of acne. It is an elimination diet and for it to work correctly you must follow it strictly to see results. these other diets you followed obvisously don't have work either because they aren't designed to eliminate your acne, assuming that is your goal. stress can definitely be at the cause of your acne. that could be another reason. but remember, if acne is supposedly cause by clogged pores from too many shedding skin cells blocking your sebaceous glands, then BP and face should work. For those they have had no results with these products then it makes sense to try the sample acne strict diet. but then again that is for those who truly desire desperately to rid themselves of ther acne and have clear skin evetually. it ain't easy. |

QUOTE(mr.peabody @ May 31 2004, 10:57 AM) Bread seems to be bad for my skin, but other than that I can't say I've noticed anything diet related. I'm the same way with bread. Or anything with wheat in it really... I read somewhere that if you have something to the effect of a mild allergy to wheat it will result in acne and really nothing else bad. So I cut wheat from my diet as much as possible and it's really helped a lot. No new break outs since. |

You know for me its completely different. Whenever I eat something like chocolate, milk/dairy products or anything that has oil in it like chips; my acne gets worse the morning after eating those foods. So I completely avoid those foods now.
Sometimes I dont even eat for like 2 or 3 days simply because I'm going to get some big spots if I do eat. Even if I eat just fruit and vegetables, I still get big spots. And when I dont eat; my acne clears up! I dont get any new spots anywhere on my body or face after not eating anything! If anything it helps speed up the healing process. |

Zits can't appear overnite. They take days to develop.
It's coincidence. |

I'm telling you its true. I have had plenty of days when my skin is pretty clear and even the night before all I can see on my face is red marks and they're not raised. Then the morning after, a spot appears out of nowhere! Usually I can tell when a spot is going to appear because either that part of the face hurts, itches or is red and raised.
The good thing is that they only last for a few days after popping them and a red/pinkish mark appears a few days later and before I know it; the red mark is just gone. |

bad diet definitely affects skin in general, for me, it was mainly soy because that caused temporary hypothyroidism (abnormally slow metabolism) for me and I happen to have a naturally very fast metabolism (ie: less than 100 pounds, average height and i eat as much if not more than your average guy) so...now dairy is definitely a culprit for general skin oiliness and bad junky food just makes my overall complexion look worse. also WATER..the more I drink it the better and less oily my skin is. Meds like Accutane do circumvent even hormonal issues and diet ones because they're such powerful drugs....but my boyfreind who has very nice skin, even his skin was looking broken out, patchy wors, after eating too much junk food.
Eat in moderation and try not to overdo anything, then really cut down when it's apparent thst you're looking worse on some foods. Wheat makes me sluggish, puffy and depressed and veggies make me feel great but they're a pain in the ass to prepare and eat. getting rid of bread and dairy DOES NOT OVERLY limit diet....vegetables meat and fruits are suppposed to comprise most of your diet anyway NOT bread or dairy we're just conditioned to stuff ourselves with conveniet junk. Also, try souvlaki that's sold at street vendors and it's a decent alternative or wraps. I can tolearte mild, non scarring acne, so I eat some crap if that's all I get.

Yeah I've heard the same thing aswell. Cocoa and DARK chocolate are good for you and MILK chocolate is bad for you. I haven't tried it myself. Has anyone else tried eating cocoa or dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate? |

Diet is not a factor in acne. But stress is.

Diet made a HUGE difference to my acne.
Warning: a bit graphic: I went from having cystic acne with pretty much every pore infected, great big purple scars all over my face and purple gel that would sometimes squirt out (once unaided -- just the pressure build up alone caused one to explode!) to having comparatively clear skin just by changing my diet. I'd been on antibiotics for years, but whenever I'd stop taking them, the acne would come back. About 15 years ago I found the diet in a book called "Acne can be cured" and basically it involves avoiding all saturated fat (there's lots of hidden saturated fats in food, so it isn't necessarily that easy to follow if you prefer to buy processed foods or don't know what to look out for). I've heard other people say that avoiding sugar helps with their acne, but I ate a reasonable amount of sugar on this diet, so it may be that different people have different dietary requirements. It may be also though that I was eating less sugar by not eating any processed foods (I pretty much ended up eating wholegrains, vegetables, fat-free yogurt, fish and occasionally skinless chicken breast, and only used olive or low saturate veg oil as a fat -- but I did make my own fat-free desserts which would have sugar in them). The Perricone acne diet also sounds very good, and it matches a theory I've had for a while that acne is an inflammatory response similar to atherosclerosis (but that's a whole 'nother post!) |

Your right Spinbooty, it depends what your body is allergic too. Iam allergic to milk, but i dont breakout, fortunatley. But everyone is different, insluin spiking foods wont increase your chance of acne, I bodybuild, and after every workout I take a insulin spiking drink, gatorade or powerade, etc. And I myself havent had that problem. But the only times I've had bad acne is when I was on a cycle. But as of now Iam getting bad acne, and Iam not taking any supplements or cycles and Iam breaking out, I have no idea, I havent changed my diet or anything.

I've broken out within hours of drinking dairy...and I mean, it's clear skin, then I feel a sting as if I was poked with a needle..and then there is a red bump. Everyones system is different. Please realize that just because YOU haven't experianced something it doesn't mean someone else hasn't. |

These are not steps, but stages some people progress through when going from conventional to holistic medicine. Stage 2 is how I became 99%+ Clear, eliminated my dysmennorhea, significantly reduced my sebum & pore size, etc & is my predominant method. Stage 1 (Treatment): * (Daily) Isocare Skin Control Cleanser, Dream Products Customized Natural Face Lotion & Coppertone Sport Spray Sunscreen (mixed) * (Sporadically) spot treat w/ anti-inflammatory (neosporin, hydrocortisone, salicylic acid) or a skin lightener (post-inflammatory pigmentation) to treat stubborn cystic/nodular acne that appears due to unknowingly or knowingly ingesting a food/ingredient that breaks me out (I do my best to avoid these foods). If you cover treated area w/ a bandaid, it makes product more effective. Stage 2 (Prevention): "cheapest" method ~ Since Aug. 2002 * Follow a Gluten-Free, Trans-Fat Free, Dairy-Free and No Added Sugar diet for my Insulin Resistance/Hyperandrogenism (Silent Chronic Inflammatory Syndrome) * Avoid ALL types of nuts and the Genus Prunus (almonds, plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries), Bananas, Pineapples, Cottonseed oil, Artificial Sweetners. Stage 3 (Correction): * 1/18/08 Ultimate Colon Cleanse (30 day program) Research: * Developing functional foods for those with acne & other special needs (assuming there's a defficiency). * Good & "safe" blend for anti-hirsutism formula (incl. NAC, Folic Acid Mega Therapy, Liver Cleansers, d-Chiro-Inositol, etc) - dietary changes helped some, but not enough, hoping Correction Stage may also solve this. |

Oh yeah I respond to ADDED sugars, certain grain carbohydrates (gluten), and trans fats. Fats & Carbs definately play a role in the formation of my acne & pores, and both of them can contribute to cholesterol & heart problems in the long run. I purchased that book that you mentioned and have only skimmed through it but yeah, it focuses on fats and doesn't eliminate other foods that I do. Yet, like you said who knows why it worked so well, was it because it eliminated the saturated & trans fats, or because it eliminated added sugars & refined carbohydrates? Heck it probably worked because it did both ;-)
