I am so excited to say that I am going to be starting Accutane (Isotretonoin), for the second time, in a month! So a little background about myself and my acne history. I have been struggling with acne since I was about 13, I am now 23, so it has been a longggg 10 year struggle. I would say that I had mild acne in the beginning and when I hit high school it developed into persistent moderate/mildly severe. I would break out all over my cheeks, around my mouth and on my forehead. So I visited my derm and tried every topical you could imagine. When none of those worked I was prescribed Accutane (for the first time). I was on a fairly low dose and felt that the entire time I was on it my acne never really got a lot better (I attribute this largely to being on a birth control pill simultaneously, because every time I have ever taken the pill my skin has gone crazy!). Anyway, fastforward to freshman year of college and my skin began clearing up on its own. It never was 100% clear, but my freshman and sophmore year it was definitely manageable. Then junior year rolled around and my acne began to flare up again. It was alllllll over my cheeks and jawline. So I am now 23, graduated from college and am still suffering from persistent acne.
Although my derm has informed me that clinically speaking, my acne isn't bad enough to be prescribed Accutane, she gave me the okay to start it because of the fact that I have literally tried everything. And I mean everything. (Doxycycline, Bactrim, Tazorac, Retin-A-Micro, Clindamycin, Benzaclin, Aczone, just to name a few). All of these would work for awhile, then my body would build up a tolerance and the acne would come right back just as bad as before.
Now I am currently on my 30-day waiting period and will be able to fill my first prescription at the end of November. Fingers crossed that the second time around Accutane will work for me.
Here are some pictures of my skin now. The lighting isn't the best, but here it is.
