I started having acne in middle school. I would only get 1 or 2 pimples here and there. This was also around the time I started to learn about make up. I got my first facial when I was 16, complete with extractions. I would get them once every few months, then once every month. This helped keep my face clear for a couple years. But I stopped getting them for a long time because I moved and didn't look into finding a new place. I tried all kinds of facial cleansers/toners/masks at our local walgreens. Nothing ever kept my skin consistently clear. I also tried Dan's regimen hoping it would be the final thing that worked. I bought the 3 steps and the AHA. I tried this for a few months but after I ran out I didn't buy again. Fast forward to summer 2013- my insurance at work finally kicked in and I set up an appointment with my doctor so I could get a referral to see a dermatologist. I had never seen an actual dermatologist before so I researched online to find out what I could expect. I was mostly looking forward to the medicine I could get. My Dr was Mai Vuong. I was distracted by her constant gum chewing. I felt that it was very unprofessional of her to chew gum the entire appointment. I didn't feel a personal connection with her- I felt like just another patient. As she was looking at my face she would talk about me to her assistant as if I wasn't there. I wanted to change my dr right then and there but I decided to just try out the medication first and see what happens. My dr told me I have moderate acne with moderate acne scars. I was prescribed 100 mg of Doxycycline a day, .05% Tretinoin and Benzamycin. I read that Doxycyline should be eaten after a meal to prevent stomach aches. I take it after dinner and have never experienced any discomfort. I started using the tretitoin cream every night right away. I didn't know I had to build up to that. I started the doxycycline & tretinoin on August 15. It is now day 61. I wasn't tracking my progress day by day so I have to go off of memory. The first couple weeks of tretinoin made my face extremely flaky and itchy. I finally started to see my scars lighten up a little bit after a month or so. I still would get pimples here and there. A few on the sides of my cheeks and a big one in between my eye brows. Everything looks like its healing. I haven't had any fresh breakouts in a while.
I haven't seen my derm since August. I plan on scheduling a new appointment for next month. My current regimen is as follows:
Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Control Foam Wash
Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Control Moisturizer with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30
Same Cetaphil Foam wash
Oral Antibiotic (100mg doxycycline)
