Ready For Change!

Entries in this blog

I've been receiving emails from acne.org lately so I decided to pull up my old profile. So interesting to look back and remember what I went through.

My face is still clear of acne! I do get pimples now and then but it is nothing like it used to be. I mostly get them right before my monthly visitor and then they go away. They are not nearly as big and red as before.

I've attached an updated photo of my date night I had with my husband last night. I actually chose not to wear makeup. What?!

All the pain and trouble I had while taking Accutane definitely paid off.

Hello all! Lots of changes since the last post. I'm just finishing up month 3. I have about 4 more days until I start on month 4. In my last entry, I talked about how I had broken out terribly after starting my new dosage. Well, technically the breakout has healed. However, it has left these strange red spots on my face where the pimples were. Definitely got scolded by my doc for picking sad.png Sometimes you just can't help it!) So I've been moisturizing the red spots like crazy to avoid itchiness and to promote healing. If I didn't have all the red spots, I believe my face would look great! I do have one active pimple right now but that is nothing compared to what it used to be! The spots are taking forever to heal. Not only the spots on my face, but any time I get a scratch anywhere it takes forever to heal since I've started Accutane!

Some other things that have changed would be that I am no longer working out and I have had to start wearing my glasses again. I haven't been able to work out with this terrible joint pain I've been experiencing. Luckily, doc said I should only have to be on Accutane for another month and a half or so. Hopefully once I'm done I can get back to it. As far as the glasses, well my eye have become so dry that I cannot tolerate contacts any longer. Hoping that side effect goes away quickly after finishing Accutane!

I'm still experiencing dry lips, hair and skin. Still using Blistex Moisture Melt which still works wonders. I still use Cetaphil for my face which I absolutely love. And still using Head and Shoulders for hair and scalp along with letting conditioner sit in my hair for about 5 minutes before rinsing.

I'm not experiencing anything too major so that's a plus. I'm ready to be done though!

I started to write this entry, then accidentally hit the back button on the browser and it was totally lost!!! :( Not cool.

Well, I'm ending month two on Accutane and let me tell you, month two was horrible! In my last entry, I noted I had been bumped up from 40mg once a day to 30mg twice a day. About a week after the new dosage, I broke out so bad!!! My forehead, chin and jawline were, and still are, covered! This is very disappointing after the great results I had in month one. I had my dermatology appointment today and the doctor reassured me that this does happen on occasion, then proceeded to give me two options; either stick it out and wait for the breakout to go away, or put me on an antibiotic while still on Accutane. I chose to just stick it out, the thought of taking another pill was not appealing to me!

Other than the bad breakout, I'm also experiencing horrible joint pain! Every time I get up it's like "oooohhh", I feel like an old woman! My joint pain is mostly in my low back, hip flexors and neck. I fear it will only get worse with this higher dosage. But hey, at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Only a few more months of this :)

Along with the joint pain, I have dry skin, hair, lips and eyes! For the lips, still using Blistex Moisture Melt which works magically. For skin, just moisturizing twice a day, especially on my face (which I use Cetaphil for). Hair, I use Head and Shoulders, also works well. As far as my eyes, I haven't quite figured that out yet. This is a new one for me. I wear contacts so I guess I just need to find some really great drops.

Lastly, I've still been soooo tired. I don't know for sure if I can attribute this to Accutane, but it truly didn't seem to start until I began taking it. Who knows, that's just what I'm thinking.

That's all for now. Hope for me that this stuff clears up soon!!!

Day 30

Hello All! So I'm on day 30 of Accutane. Should be on day 32 but I forgot take a couple of pills while we were on vacation. Speaking of vacation..... I learned my lesson about being in the sun while on this medication!! We went to the Gulf Coast and wow did I get burnt. Spent Sunday on the beach, applied and reapplied sunblock several times throughout the day and still got burnt. Woke up Monday with a burn and woke up Tuesday with blisters covering my upper back and shoulders. Luckily, I bought really great Neutrogena facial sunblock so nothing happened to my face!! :)

Other than that horrible burn, things have been going wonderfully. Side effects would be dry lips still. Have been able to maintain with the Blistex Moisture Melt, it's still working wonders! I was able to get rid of the dandruff/dry scalp by using Head and Shoulders, and I also leave my conditioner on for about 5 minutes before I rinse it off. I also did a couple of deep conditioning treatments I purchased and a local beauty supply store. I also use this product called Ice, it has aloe and vitamin e, it works really well at keeping my hair moisturized, no so dry. I have been following docs orders and moisturizing my whole body at least once a day, if not twice. Oh, and I also bought Aveeno's oatmeal bath stuff. Just trying to stay proactive to avoid super dry skin.

I had my dermatology appointment last week and the doctor was very impressed at the progress I have made already. My face is clearing up nicely! I posted some pictures. They aren't very clear, the lighting was pretty bad. But I can tell you I only have like 3 new pimples, a couple scratches on my nose (?) and quite a bit of scarring on my cheeks. I'm happy with the results so far! I have been bumped up on dosage from 40mg to 60mg. She offered to bump up to 80mg but I requested 60 instead. I don't want to do too much too fast.

Oh, I forgot. One other side effect I have been experiencing is joint pain. Mostly in my hips and low back. Also, more than usual pain in my neck. I just recently started back at the gym so I'm hoping that will help. I also started taking my fish oil 3 times a day rather than just once a day, hoping that will help the joints as well.

Well, that's all for now. Will update in 30 days unless something changes significantly.

Thanks for reading :)

Anyone have the side effect of being very tired while on Accutane? Holy buckets, I could not get my butt up off the couch today!!! It's beautiful outside but I just can't seem to get myself out there! Pretty sure I'm having symptoms of depression already. But I suffered from depression and anxiety before taking this medicine so it doesn't surprise me. I regulate my depression with good ol' exercise! Although, I haven't been able to make it to the gym for over a month due to a nasty cough. My cough is gone so hopefully I can make myself get back to it :)

That's all :)

Before starting Accutane, I read so many blogs and watch so many YouTube videos to help make my decision. So I figured what the heck, it only seems right/natural to make my own blog documenting my experience :)

I'm 24 years old and have I had acne for about 10 years or so. To me, my acne doesn't seem so bad. It doesn't bother me that much, but it bothers my mom (haha). She asked me to see a dermatologist, so I did. I've tried several options the past couple of years, including topical and oral medications. Couldn't begin to list them all (frankly, because I have a horrible memory!). None of these worked, obviously, so my dermatologist told me about Accutane, gave me all of the information and sent me on my way. After a lot of research and number crunching, and a breakout the day before, I decided I'm sick of having acne and I'm going to do this!

So, here I am. Starting my blog here a littile late; I just took my 9th pill. But I'm super excited for good results in the near future!

So far I've already started to experience the dry lips that everyone has talked about, as well as dandruff. EVERY video or blog I watched/read talked about dry lips and just about everyone used aquaphor as a cure. So I made sure I had some aquaphor on hand before I even started taking this medication. At the first sign of dry lips, I started using it. Let me tell you, for me personally, the aquaphor only made the drying worse, and it caused a red chapped ring to appear on the skin around my lips. I went to the store to see what else I could find and ended up grabbing Blistex Moisture Melt. It took the red ring away overnight! And my lips are so replenished. They feel normal again! For the dandruff, I just picked up some head and shoulder as well as a conditioning mask from a local beauty supply store. Seems to have helped although it's only been a day, so we'll see.

I've posted a couple before pictures for your enjoyment ;)

Good luck fellow Accutane users!
