My Accutane Journey

Entries in this blog

Weeks 3&4

I'm a little behind on posting, but i figured better late than never! I actually just started the second month of accutane! I'm a little late starting it because of Thanksgiving, but the PA said it stays in your system for about a week anyway and I haven't had any problems being off of it. When I visited my derm, we decided to keep me on the 20 mg twice daily since I'm seeing such great improvement.

I've been experiencing the same symptoms for a couple weeks now. Dry lips (had a crack in my lip once and it started to bleed, i slept with some neosporin on it and it was healed by the next morning) dry nostrils (had a blood nose twice errr.gif ), dry eyes, fatigue, just the usual pretty much. The one weird thing I experienced was some raised bumps on the back of my hands. It didn't itch, and wasn't even really dry. I still don't know what it was, but my derm gave me cloderm to put on it.

I have seen quite a bit of improvement the past two weeks and can't wait for it to get even better! I did have a nasty breakout about a week ago, but luckily it healed quickly (once popped). I'm still using my redness solutions kit from clinique along with their moisture surge moisturizer. I have yet to had any dry skin on my face that I couldn't manage with those products! It looks like my pharmacy is now carrying amnesteem instead of claravis so I'll do an update on that if I see any differences. I believe that's all for now, so I'll be back to update next week!

I'm gunna try to upload some pics now!

Week 2!

I can't believe it's only been 2 weeks! The progress my skin has made this past week has been more than I had ever anticipated. I would have been happy if this were the end result! Last week I shared how I was experiencing the initial breakout... buuutttt maybe I was wrong. It was still the worst breakout I had ever experienced, not in quantity but the size of the few I had and the pain it was causing!!

My acne to begin with was moderate, maaaaybe mild-moderate. I've always been able to hide it with makeup but over time have progressed to be 'that lady' who won't go to the grocery store without makeup on. I didn't realize how much it had been impacting my self esteem and ability to socialize.

I'm still experiencing fatigue, chapped lips, dry hands/feet, achy back is a new symptom (but that could have just been the 9 hour shift standing on my feet at work). A new symptom I've had this week is sun sensitivity and that hot feeling your skin has after being sunburnt. Weird.I have also been waking up at night because my neck will have the same hot feeling (this may also be because we're just now transitioning to winter here in texas and I haven't got the whole thermostat thing down yet hah).

I have started using clinique's redness solution 3 piece kit. As I had mentioned last time, I had been diagnosed with rosacea and was on antibiotics to treat it. After getting off the antibiotics (I've been off about a month now), my face always had a red tint to it, no matter how much foundation/powder etc i used!! I had tried a sample of clinique's redness solution daily relief cream a few months back and loved it! I'm obsessed with everything else clinique and considering their the only brand that doesn't irritate my overly sensitive skin I figured I'd give the redness kit a shot and I'm so glad I did. No more blotchy red skin, I now have smooth porcelain like skin. It can only get better from here. In conjunction with the kit, I have been using their moisture surge moisturizer on my face and using all about eyes rich around my eyes morning and evening and havent experienced ANY dryness. I highly reccomend any of the products ive discussed (for guys too! they dont have flowery smells or anything, no shame in moisturizing!) I have still been applying clindamycin lotion at least once a day as well hoping this will help with any breakouts.

I hope I didn't bore y'all too much with my product raving! I've just been thrilled that something finally works! Week 1

blogentry-187954-0-40603800-1354156657_tblogentry-187954-0-26218700-1354156832_tHi all!

So not only is this my first post on this website but its also my first blog ever! Let me start by introducing myself, I'm a 24 year old female and have been struggling with acne for about 6 years. My acne has got progressively worse the past year. I've tried different birth controls, no birth control, antibiotics (topical and oral), different face washes and daily routines, drinking tons of water everyday etc. you get the point, I've tried everything. For the past 2-3 years I've been on oracea, which is an oral antibiotic typically used for rosacea. In conjunction with oracea, I was using clindamycin lotion (morning) and tretinoin cream 0.05% (evening). My boyfriend recommend I ask my derm about accutane (which he had taken years before and had great success), but I was very reluctant due to the scary side effects ( I was really worried about pregnancy issues post accutane). But after doing research and reading many blogs like this, I decided to make the leap.

Now on to the good stuff...

I've now been on claravis 20 mg twice daily for one week now. I have still been using the topical clindamycin to help with the initial breakout...yes I've got the initial breakout, it sucks but isn't too much worse than the acne I already have been getting! Hopefully it won't last long.

Some symptoms I've experienced so far are fatigue, nausea, slight headaches, moodiness (ha my poor boyfriend), dry lips (Im constantly applying lip balm, so far my favorites are aquaphor and Vaseline- the tiny little jar made for lips), dry hands, dry face (I've been using clinique dramatically different as a moisturizer and eucerin face wash), whew! I'm hoping all these symptoms will be worth it!

I will be adding pictures as soon as I upload them from my phone. In the mean time if anyone has any questions/comments I'd love to hear from you guys! It makes it easier to know we're all going through this together. whistling.gif)
