Do More...

I am standing on a soap box as I write this blog entry. Having cured myself of cystic nodular acne I have wisdom to impart. First of all, finding a good dermatologist is crucial. Most doctors will prescribe whatever you suggest so do your homework. Ask friends and use this site-but you already know that. Second, take antibiotics. The gain outweighs possible side effects. Third, complain. If you start a regimen and still breakout, make a follow up appointment with your derm. You will be surprised at how likely your derm will be to increase the dose of your antibiotics or add some stronger acne fighters to your arsenal. For myself, I take Amoxicillin, cephalexin, Retin-A, Benzaclin and stand alone clindagel. Be consistent and never stop a medication once your skin is clear. This is a lifelong battle. To remain clear you must remain consistent. PEACE!

You make some good points such as:

  • finding a good derm
  • doing your research and being proactive

I disagree with the antibiotics bit because of my own person experience but to each his own.  I am happy that you have found something that works for you

Good Luck

You are a really smart person Sasch83. I agree with you that antibiotics are not right for everyone. I just say that antibiotics are great because they cured me. I mean, its like a miracle or something...but I know they don't work for everyone.

Thank you for this post! You give us all who are hopeless -hope! Sumthing that is so important to encourage you to beat acne.sometimes I feel its never going to get better and feel like giving up .but its people like u I cherish so much in my life who give me that little ooomphh to continue .take care
Hi amoxilworkx,

For how long did you have to take antibiotics to cure your acne?

I tried them, but when I stopped i started getting more cystic acne than ever.
Will you have to do another round soon?

My dermatologist prescribes them long-term. I have been taking antibiotics continuously for three years. At the conclusion of year two I had a startling improvement. I have to be honest with you, I took 5 times the recommended dose for about one year. Since then, I never breakout. I literally killed billions of bacteria that had clogged up my pores. Now, I take 3pills a day each a 500mg strength amoxicillin. I also recommend cephalexin antibiotic but nothing else really gets at the root of it.

wow, that sounds like a lot of antibiotics!  But I am happy for you that is working.

Are you taking any probiotics? I think you should. When I used them in my 20's nobody knew of probiotics, I think that's why they messed up my immune system so bad.

Will they put you on remission? how many more years doyou have to take them?

I use probitics like kefir and yogurt each day. I plan to stay on antibiotics forever unless my dermatologist takes me off of them. Thanks for asking.
